You are what you do, not what you say you will do

It has always been much easier to create expectations than to fulfill them, which is why we tend to be more accustomed to probabilities that remain in the air than to certainties. In the end what happens is that you tend to forget that you are what you do and not what you say you will do: You are what your actions say about you and your intentions are the decoration.

An old proverb said:

“You should not cross the bridge until you reach it.”

As you act, you are leaving a kind of trace around you that can reach others or have an impact on your immediate future: a reaction or an attitude towards a situation is capable of making a difference. In other words, the good heart you have needs to be in tune with your movements and your thoughts: What you say transmits, but what you do arrives and is felt.

The frustration of expectations

We love expectations and, to a certain extent, they inspire us to achieve what we want: they are built as impulses and are filled with our dreams of continuing to grow or of making others happy. This way Expectations become the point of origin of authenticity because they are born from the depths of each person, but also of fragility and frustration.

“Expectations were like fine china. The tighter you held on to them, the more likely they were to break.”

-Brandon Sanderson-

Without realizing it, many of the daily thoughts we have are expectations and illusions that are nourished by the promises of others or our own personal hopes placed in them: “he promised me that we would go out to celebrate and now he can’t”, “I’m sure I’ll make that interview great, I’ve prepared a lot for it”, “he’s waiting for the CD I showed him for his birthday, but I forgot to buy it”, etc. These could be everyday examples of what we have been discussing.

In cases where the promises on one side and the expectations on the other are not accompanied by the effort to make them come true, they are useless, as they only generate disappointment, sadness or irritation: The purposes are not absolute truths and the error is in taking them as if they were. In this sense, a fact can only be grasped without fear of breaking when it has been fully executed.

You are what you do: your actions define you

When in the movie Batman Begins someone points out: “it’s not who you are on the inside, your actions define you”, he seemed to want to propose a deeper reflection on the subject. It’s not that it doesn’t matter what we have inside, it’s just that Externally, actions reveal us regardless of what we want to make people believe with words.

That is, you are what you do because if your heart is good, your relationships will notice it in the small details and, on the contrary, if it is bad the promises and expectations you generate will not be able to hide it.

After all We all have three personalities: what we are, what we think we are, and what others think we are.; all the more reason to seek for the three to live in harmony. If we say we will do something and we don’t do it, what happens is that the three personalities collide and negative emotions are created.

Where then are the good intentions?

Good purposes are fundamental, since without them the ends will hardly be good as well. It is beneficial to have the purpose of continually improving ourselves; for example at work, where the goals we set are so important.

“Actions that serve a purpose and achieve it are useful or good.”

-Maimonides-

However, Having the purpose of achieving a goal does not alone lead us to it; And, if not, how many of your New Year’s resolutions have you fulfilled in recent months? Probably many were left with the desire to start 2016. Having positive resolutions gives us vitality and adrenaline, but it is necessary to accompany them with action, movement.
