Why you should avoid going barefoot, even at home

Taking off your shoes when entering the house is all we certainly need to relax after a busy day. But allowing tired feet to relax can’t be a reason for you to walk barefoot around the house. In fact, not wearing shoes at all can have unpleasant consequences for the health and beauty of your feet.

Even if you’ve just cleaned the floor, that doesn’t mean it’s free of microorganisms. The floor may even look squeaky clean, but the presence of dust containing harmful bacteria and fungi will remain very likely. By walking barefoot, you end up exposing yourself to the action of pathogens capable of infecting the skin. And this can even cause the nails to be contaminated, leaving them yellow and brittle.

Walking barefoot on the grass occasionally feels good and helps relieve stress, but taking the habit indoors tends to be harmful. Soft surfaces allow the foot to sink in naturally, supporting the inside of the foot. But most floors are very hard, and walking without the support provided by shoes can cause unnatural stress, leading to sore heels and knees.

Not wearing shoes on hard surfaces causes an unequal distribution of weight on the feet and if they already have deformities, this imbalance can exacerbate them, including conditions affecting the upper body, causing pain in the knees and back.

In addition to causing pain in the legs and back, walking barefoot frequently can cause bad odors. Giving up shoes means being unprotected against bacteria, for example, in the showers at the gym or even at home. With this habit, you are more easily exposed to infections capable of causing the infamous foot odor.
