Why does your baby stick out his tongue?

While many people think of a baby sticking out its tongue as cute, some parents see this behavior as worrying. Fortunately, in most cases this is completely normal. Babies often behave this way to interact with the world or express their needs. We use the adverb “generally” because there are, yes, some situations in which the tongue out denotes something worrying.

we, from awesome.clubwe decided to research and find out what babies are trying to tell us with this gesture.

1. Are hungry

Babies have a strong sucking reflex and sticking out their tongue can be their way of telling them it’s time to eat. Newborns sometimes don’t start crying as soon as they feel hungry, and instead give more subtle cues. They may try to put their hands over their mouths, smack their lips, or lean towards the breast or bottle. So sticking out your tongue might just be an instinct babies have to show hunger.

2. Are satiated

A baby may also stick out its tongue to show that it no longer wants to eat. To distinguish this situation from being hungry, parents should pay attention to body language. If a child tries to pull away, looks irritated, or even starts crying, it’s a sign that he’s had enough to eat.

3. They’re just kidding

4. They are showing that they are not prepared for solid foods

Even though some pediatricians say you can start giving solid foods to babies as early as six months, certain children may not yet be ready for such a drastic change in diet. Then they can stick out their tongue to push the food away. This instinct prevents the baby from choking on food if it is not prepared to eat solids. But if the baby constantly refuses to eat these firmer foods, it’s best to see a doctor to eliminate the risk of potential health problems.

5. May be mouth breathing

As a rule, babies breathe in and out through their nose. But in some situations, such as when they get a cold or have large tonsils, they can get into the habit of breathing through their mouth. And as a result, they stick out their tongue. If you notice that your baby has any breathing problems or makes unusual sounds, it’s best to see a pediatrician right away.

6. May have some health problems

While it can be completely natural for babies to stick out their tongue, sometimes it can indicate health issues, such as gas pain or poor muscle tone. If you notice that your child sticks out his tongue more than usual, drools too much, or behaves differently, it’s best to consult a pediatrician for your little one’s safety.
