Why did Freddie Mercury leave half of his fortune to her?

Freddie Mercury maintained relationships with other men, but the great love of his life was a woman. Mary Austin met him before his band, Queen, rose to fame. They spent nearly half of their lives together, even after the singer revealed his sexual orientation. He dedicated the song “Love of my life” to her, who always accompanied him, even in his last moments.

In 1991, when Freddie Mercury died of pneumonia complicated by AIDS at age 45, Mary Austin was by his side. When he left, he left her half of all her possessions, although he spent the last few years of his life in a steady relationship with her boyfriend, Jim Hutton.

In total, her inheritance was over $70 million and a 28-bedroom mansion in Kensington, London, where Mary lives to this day. “What better person to leave my fortune behind when I’m gone?” he said in an interview. But why would Freddie want to leave a part of everything he had achieved in life to this woman?

Born into a modest family, Austin worked in 1969 at Biba, a London fashion store. Mercury also worked at a thrift store nearby in Kensington. It was there that they met. It all happened very quickly and after a few months they were living together. As she would remember years later, “we grew up together.”

Austin accompanied Mercury on his tours and rehearsals. But while he impressed the world, that success did not accompany him at home. Their relationship has soured to the point that Austin thinks her fiancé is cheating on her. When he managed to muster the strength to discuss the relationship, Freddie confessed that he was bisexual.

Austin left the apartment where they both lived, but not Mercury’s life. She never stopped being his companion and continued to attend the shows, listening to his problems, keeping his sexuality and even his illness a secret. And he continued to love her until the end. “When he died, I felt like we had a marriage, we did it in good times and bad, in rich and poor, in health and in sickness,” Austin said years later.

And Mercury thought the same thing. “All my partners asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but that’s just impossible,” she once said. “The only friend I have is her, and I don’t want anyone else. To me she was my wife before the law, to me it was a marriage.”

She was together before success and fame, and also after, even when things became painful and illness became a part of their lives. She accompanied him in his last moments, which is why she inherited much of what Mercury achieved throughout his life. That’s how Mary Austin is today.
