WhatsApp will stop working on some cell phone models in the coming months (the list has Android, IOS and Windows Phone)

Currently, most people use cell phone applications, a technology that is accessible to everyone and helps a lot in our daily lives. The WhatsApp application, for example, has just over 120 million users in Brazil and, according to the platform, the country ranks fifth in the number of users in the world. But what if it became unavailable to some people?

The most used messaging application in Brazil has reported that it will stop working on some cell phones, and this will happen because these models no longer receive updates from the Operating System they have (Android, IOS and Windows Phone). As the application needs to make modifications to improve the service, some devices have obsolete technology.

The versions of Operating Systems that will no longer support the application are:

Android version equal to or less than 2.3.7; IOS equal to or less than 7; Windows Phone 8.0.

Regardless of the make and model, all cell phones have an icon called configuration. There you can check, among other things, the model and version of the Operating System:

On Android devices, go to:

Settings > About Phone and check the numbering informed in Android Version as in the photo above. There are some variations, but the sequence is always very similar.

On Apple-branded devices, the path is a little different:

Go to Settings > General > About and check the numbering informed in Version.

On the Windows Phone system it is quite simple to find:

Go to your smartphone’s applications > Settings > About, there you’ll find which version is installed on your device.

Few people today have this type of system on their device, they are usually cell phones with more than 5 years of release and even that the Operating System does not update anymore. And this happens, precisely, because the cell phone no longer supports the most modern programming existing today on smartphones, but you will be able to receive and make calls normally with it.

It seems that the only solution is to opt for a more modern device, since no further updates are scheduled to make such devices support the application’s technology. But it is not necessary to buy an expensive and state-of-the-art device if you do not want or cannot afford it, there are some cell phones that have very affordable prices on the market.

Depending on the cell phone model and Operating System, there are some applications that may still work to exchange messages. Here is a list of some that can be tested on your device:

A much more modest application that is compatible with almost all operating systems (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Bada, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows). A good option for those who need another free messaging app, and it also provides voice calls and the use of stickers and gifs.

The app that comes linked to Facebook can be downloaded with previous versions and works well on older phones (link). It’s a great alternative for those who need to send messages and comes on a social networking platform that almost everyone uses these days. It’s also a free option that only requires the user to create a Facebook account, if they don’t already have one.

Windows Phone:

All devices that have the platform will no longer have access to Whatsapp.

On IOS and Android platforms, it is no longer allowed to register new WhatsApp accounts or re-verify already registered accounts. But for those who already have the application installed, it will still work until February 2020. However, those who have the Windows Phone Operating System, the application may be unavailable as early as July 2019.
