What is pelvic physiotherapy and for whom the treatment is indicated

What is pelvic physiotherapy

But what does a professional in this area do? Who is pelvic physiotherapy suitable for and how do the sessions work? Daiane told us everything and we will teach you. Check out!

What is pelvic physiotherapy for?

According to Daiane, “pelvic physiotherapy is one of the many specialties of physiotherapy. It works exclusively with a group of muscles known as the perineum. The perineum takes care of the urinary, fecal and sexual part. Problems in the region can lead to loss of urine, feces and changes in sexual intercourse.”

Who is it for?

”This physiotherapy is indicated for all people who have changes in the muscles of the perineum. However, two dysfunctions are very common in pelvic physiotherapy offices: urinary incontinence and female sexual dysfunctions”, says the professional.

The reason? Daiane says that the two main ones are the lack of knowledge and taboos about women’s bodies and sexuality. “If we learned from a young age to exercise and get to know our perineum, we wouldn’t have so many dysfunctions”, says Daiane.

How are the sessions?

The physical therapist also says “that the sessions are similar to those of the gynecologist, however manual resources (hands), relaxation/strengthening techniques and devices are used in the perineum. The number of sessions will depend on each case and patient diagnosis.”
