What is masculinism and why men don’t want to be macho anymore

The movement for women’s suffrage and the feminist movement itself were and are very important in relation to various social achievements. In the last century, society has watched with great interest the conquest by women of the right to go to the polls and to work wherever they wanted. However, there is a portion of the population that claims that some struggles stole a significant part of men’s rights and opportunities. Some ideologies even claim that they are discriminated against.

O awesome.club decided to do a little more research on this controversial topic to find out why some men are unhappy with the current situation.

what is masculinism

In reality, men do not complain about the way society is organized. They are unhappy with the one-sided character of feminism. In the 1960s, a set of cultural, political and economic ideologies and movements emerged in the United States, the so-called masculinism. Its representatives fought and fight for the equal rights of men and women and defend the idea that boys and men are humiliated for gender issues.

Masculinists don’t feel offended by women and don’t want to fight feminists; they just want societies do not demand from them the role of prince charming🇧🇷 This is the main struggle of modern masculinists.

The “lookism” that harms men

The English term lookism — or unatractiphobia — (which has already been the subject of a post from Incrível.club) is used to designate prejudiced attitudes towards a person’s appearance. This situation affects not only women (who often complain about this type of prejudice in the workplace), but also men. Many of them feel the problem of being passed over in companies, for example, in relation to other more attractive employees. Good-looking guys, therefore, would have the upper hand in many situations simply because of their looks. In this sense, much research confirms the words of masculinists.

In general, a woman dreams of a tall man, about 1.81 meters. However, the average height of men does not reach this ideal and is 1.75-1.76 meters. Redheads and bald people lose points compared to brunettes and those with hair. According to a survey, several girls dream of a brunette with brown eyes. Many women say, “We like dark-skinned men because these men give an impression of being stronger-minded, energetic, and self-assured.” The beard is another plus. Men with beards are perceived as more masculine and determined. In addition, they are more likely to be hired in selection processes in companies. Women like guys with broad shoulders. This has also been confirmed in research. and cinema have created the image of an ideal man who is far from reality. Many girls buy products from brands that use the image of men portrayed as macho in their advertisements. However, the male “lookism” has sad consequences. For example, the so-called body dysmorphic disorder (dysmorphophobia). Modern men are starting to feel ashamed of their bodies because they are not strong enough, dark, muscular, etc. Dysmorphophobia leads to an increase in anabolic use and can cause depression when this ideal cannot be achieved.

Men also experience domestic violence

In people’s minds, domestic violence always places women as victims and men as tyrants. But men can also suffer.

In England, 30% of victims of domestic violence are men mistreated by their girlfriends, wives and mothers. The problem is that they don’t have anyone to turn to, because there are almost no support centers for men in these situations. Women are more ‘creative’ about abuse. In most cases it is not physical violence, but emotional, financial blackmail and sexual abuse. Men are often embarrassed to ask for help because society doesn’t take this problem seriously. In general, a ‘real’ man should not complain that a woman is hurting him.

However, times have changed. In the UK, for example, coercive control can lead to jail. Housewife Valerie Sanders, from North Yorkshire, North East England, spent several hours in prison because she forced her husband to vacuum.

Parents have fewer rights regarding child rearing

In the case of divorce, in many countries it is the mother who takes care of the children. No matter how parents behaved in the past, they almost always have to face a battle to be able to raise a child.

Decisions related to reproduction are always the woman’s. On television, in movies, and in books, parents are always portrayed as people who don’t really know what they’re doing. They don’t know what to eat, they don’t have the slightest ability to change a diaper and they almost faint from the smell of poop.

In general, men do more dangerous work.

There are professions that are considered more masculine. In general, they are the most dangerous, such as police (especially those who work on the streets), employees of oil platforms and mining companies, for example.

Men die or are injured 10 times more than women in work environments. According to research, men are willing to spend more time on their way to work (stuck in traffic or public transport, for example) than women.

This happens because the man is used to sacrificing his time and his health to support his family. This is another point that masculinists argue.

Life expectancy is shorter than that of women

All over the world, women live longer than men. In developed countries, the difference is four or five years, but it is even greater in developing countries.

At the Brazil, according to the IBGE, the life expectancy of men is 72.5 years and that of women is 79.6 years. Men commit four times more suicide than women. In the United States, 35,000 men die of prostate cancer each year and 43,000 women die of breast cancer. At the same time, six times as much money is spent on breast cancer research. While men are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, the situation is changing. According to scientific research, in 2050 men will live longer than women.

Taboos about female activities and gender stereotypes

Perhaps the biggest problem for masculinists is gender stereotypes (ideas about what a ‘real man’ should do🇧🇷 They claim that society expects a man to always be strong and tough, like the typical macho man played by Clint Eastwood in the movies. And these profiles are reaffirmed by parents, grandparents, school, etc., from childhood.

Although the feminist movement is over 100 years old, women are still considered the weaker sex. Masculinists also talk about the difference between motherhood and fatherhood and how the struggle in this regard is seen as something of a joke by many people. Psychologists have shown that a group of people in an emergency would be more willing to sacrifice a man than a woman. For example, if a man and a woman are drowning and there is only one lifeboat, it is thrown to the woman. Parents feel embarrassed when their sons like girl things and are generally more tolerant of daughters. Women who commit crimes tend to live better than men. In some countries they are spared the death penalty, for example.

Where can this fight take us?

Sometimes the struggle for equality with women takes on a strange character. In Japan, a group called ‘herbs’ (in Japanese, soshoku danshi) appeared recently. The word ‘herb’ means herbivore, in a kind of indication that this part of the population does not practice or seek sex and marriage. They are not homosexuals. They simply claim that the role of ‘family man’ is too heavy for them.

In Asia, there is also a new trend, ‘soft masculinity’. Men are not ashamed to use cosmetics to take care of the body and face. For them, brutality is not in fashion.

Of course, compared to feminism, masculinism is still a movement with less visibility and adherence by men themselves. It must be remembered that the struggle for women’s rights has a long history. In addition, feminism itself ends up causing masculinism to be seen as a kind of weakness by a large part of society.

What is your opinion on masculinism? Do you believe that what the movement proposes makes sense? Or do you think the demands of this movement are ridiculous?
