Many people who decide to adopt a four-legged friend as a life partner agree that the treatment given to the pet needs to be almost the same given to any family member. After all, dogs also like to be pampered, to accompany us on our daily walks and to eat well. When it comes to food, there is a natural diet that would be able to help dogs in disease prevention. And it is this topic that we will address below.
In this postO awesome.club reveals what the natural diet for dogs, called “BARF”, indicating its benefits.
What is the BARF diet
The BARF or ACBA (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet states that pets should be fed as they would in the wild. In other words, dogs should be fed raw food, since that’s how the diet for their bodies evolved, due to genetic adaptation. Any more or less food is contraindicated, as it could harm canine health.
It was Dr. Ian Billinghurst, who introduced the BARF diet to the world in 1993. According to him, when fed naturally, pets obtain benefits such as the prevention of problems in the teeth, skin, ears, eyes, intestines, kidneys, in the heart, pancreas, liver and immune system.
What foods can you include in this diet?
The ingredients used in the BARF diet are simple and easy to find. We are talking about meat, bones, viscera, fruits, vegetables, etc. They must always be raw, so that dogs can absorb all the nutrients present. The diet can also be improved by administering food supplements such as vitamins. It is necessary to take into account the importance of the variety of foods, to avoid nutritional imbalances.
1. Meat
If the idea is to feed our dogs as if they lived in the wild, then we need to give them a good amount of animal protein, allowing the pet to make the most of the nutritional properties of the food.
Meat: contains essential amino acids, beneficial especially in the mating season, for growing puppies and less active dogs. She is also great for dogs with heart problems, as she has low sodium and potassium levels. And it’s worth remembering: it’s essential to invest in a quality product, as meat in poor condition can harm your health.
Fleshy bones: we know that, for dogs, bones are like desired prizes. And if you like the idea of rewarding your pet with bones, it is preferable that they are raw. Bones are an essential part of a dog’s diet because they are living tissue. They function as an ample source of nutrients, providing natural antioxidant (anti-aging) factors.
Viscera or organs: they also represent an important part of dog food because they are concentrated sources of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Much appreciated by dogs, this option can include heart, lungs, cartilage, kidneys and liver, among other parts. Bear in mind that the consumption of viscera must be controlled, depending on the physical condition of the dog.
2. Vegetables and fruits
We must not forget that dogs are omnivores. Therefore, they can eat both meats and vegetables and fruits. One way to introduce the natural diet and enrich it is by adding fruits and vegetables to the meat. Thus, the animal will feel different flavors and will be favored with a wide range of nutrients.
Vegetables: Generally, traditional diets can leave dogs deficient in certain nutrients (fatty acids, soluble and insoluble fiber). Green leafy vegetables were part of the diet of wild dogs, but there are others that can also be added, thanks to their high nutritional value. This is the case with broccoli, celery, spinach, carrots and red peppers.
Fruits: their main nutrients are water and soluble carbohydrates, but they are also rich in fiber, vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants. They are not essential, as such nutrients can be obtained from other foods. However, fruits help to expand the variety of meals.
3. Nutritional supplements
By itself, foods contain small amounts of these nutritional elements. It is important to control the proper amount for our pets. Among the supplements indicated are cod liver oil, vitamin E, zinc oxide and manganese oxide. Consider that food supplements for dogs are the subject of constant research, aiming to increase the benefits for our pets.
What do you think of the BARF diet? Does feeding your dog raw food sound like a good idea? What foods do you usually give to your pet? Comment!
