The unusual love story of Will Smith and Jada celebrating 25 years together

The union of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett is one of the longest in Hollywood. They’ve been married for over 25 years, but the relationship is far from ordinary. After more than two decades, the “Smiths” have revealed that their marriage is open, meaning they can date different people but remain together. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett met in 1990 when he was 22 and she was 19. Will had been offered the lead role in A Freak Out, and the young actress auditioned for the role of his girlfriend. Unfortunately, Jada didn’t get the role because of her height: Will is much taller than she is.

As Will later said, it was love at first sight. But at that moment, they were just friends.

Five years after their first date, Will and Jada started their relationship. At that time, the actor had divorced his first wife, Sheree Zampino, with whom he had a son, Trey, in 1992 (pictured left). Although Will didn’t believe he would go through with a divorce, he realized after he met Jada that his wife wasn’t the right person he wanted to be with.

A year after they started dating, Will and Jada got married, but no details of the ceremony had been released. The official wedding took place in 1997, but it didn’t go very well for Jada. 3 months pregnant, the ceremony was unpleasant as Jada felt very sick. Believe it or not: Jada didn’t want to get married because she didn’t see the point in it, but her mother insisted because she wanted to attend her daughter’s wedding.

In 1998, the couple welcomed their first child, Jaden, and in 2000, baby girl Willon was born. The two children later appeared in films alongside their father. Jaden followed in the brilliant footsteps his father took, acting and singing, and Willow pursued a career as a model and presenter.

Will said that the relationship with his wife started in a traditional and monogamous way, but at some point, they didn’t feel comfortable, so they decided to change the way of communication. They started to be seen in public with other partners, but that didn’t mean they were divorced — it was just a new shape for their relationship, as unusual as it might seem. It was a mutual decision as both parties decided that “marriage could not be a prison”.

In 2020, Jada confirmed the rumors that she was in a relationship with American musician August Alsina. She said she had had an affair with him about four and a half years earlier. This affair happened during the time she and Will broke up.

“I just wanted to feel good, I haven’t felt good in a long time,” she revealed of her relationship with August. But their romance was temporary, and soon after, she realized, “You can’t find happiness outside of yourself.”

Despite their open relationship, they are still the most important people in each other’s lives. The couple does not call their relationship a marriage, but rather a lifelong partnership. “There’s nothing that can happen to stop us from sticking together and loving each other,” Will once said. As both affirm: “We walk together, we die together”. And we hope that bond never ends!
