The Top 20 Different Types of Witches Revealed | Welcome to Wicca now

Hello my magical loves and welcome to Magic Magic. I’ve written a lot about herbs and plants lately, like this post on witch gardens and one on herbs for love and herbs for self-love. I also shared some of my favorite rituals and spells, reviewed my home protection spell and an anxiety relief ritual. As I was writing these, I realized that I wasn’t talking about a fairly important topic. Today I want to talk about all the different types of witches so you can find out what type of witch you are. Are you ready to dive in?

You don’t have to pigeonhole yourself to be just one type of witch. It’s perfectly okay to identify with several different types of witches and to change your mind if you identified with something in the past but don’t feel that way anymore. Life is like that. Our opinions and ideas change regularly and it would be quite unfair for us to feel like we need to commit completely and stay that way forever.

For example, I’m a lonely witch who identifies with eclectic witchcraft, as well as kitchen and green witchcraft, and a little bit of hedge houndry. As confusing as this may seem, I live by the motto that a dear family member of mine loves: “Let your joy be unlimited.”

Side note: When I talk about a witch, I am referring to both male and female practitioners. The witch is often only associated with the woman, but this is actually wrong and a witch can be both male and female.

I have sorted the different types of witches below alphabetically, please remember they are in order of importance. Everyone is the same and no witch is better than the other!

Take our quiz to find out what kind of witch you are here!

20 different types of witches

Type of Witch #1 Alexandrian Witch

Alexandrian Witchcraft was founded by Alex Sanders and his wife Maxine Sanders in the 1960s. The Sanders based many of their ideas on the teachings of Gerald Gardeners, but also chose to incorporate ceremonial magic and Kabbalah, which Alex Sanders had previously studied.

Alexandrian Wicca focuses on gender polarity, which is evident in the way Sabbaths are celebrated. Rituals often revolve around the relationship between the goddess and the god.

Maxine Sanders confirms the idea that Alexandrian sorcery is more versatile than Gardnerian sorcery, stating, “If it works, use it.” Personally, I really like this type of witchcraft, as I’m also a fan of being able to pick things that work for you, rather than being stuck in a rigid structure. Alexandrian devotees have more latitude to do as they please and are not required to practice ritual nudity if they do not wish to. Again something I’m all for as I don’t think anyone needs to be naked if they don’t want to.

This is Alex and Maxine Sanders, the founders of Alexandrian Wicca.

Alexandrian covens often meet during new or full moons and during the Sabbath festivals. To become an Alexandrian witch you must be initiated. Only then are you allowed to learn and participate in the rituals that the circle performs. To be initiated into a coven, another witch must be willing to help you. Alexandrians believe that “only one witch can make another witch”. This is something I don’t agree with because I’m all about being able to be a solitary practitioner and still be able to call myself a witch.

There are 3 levels of initiation, and only a 2nd or 3rd level witch can initiate a new witch into the coven. To become a 3rd level witch, another 3rd level witch would have to initiate you. Third degree witches are referred to as “High Priestess” or “High Priestess”. Some covens allow a rank before initiation so newcomers can see if they like the coven without being bound by its rules.

Witch Type #2 Augury Witch

This type of witchcraft dates back to the ancient Romans. They firmly believed in the practice of augury, the study of birds to determine the will of the gods. The augurs of ancient Rome studied the behavior, flight, and calls of a single bird or a group of birds to determine whether the gods thought an idea favorable or not.

An augury witch learns to interpret signs and omens to determine whether or not someone is on the right path. Her main purpose is to help and guide people who are on a spiritual quest. You act as an interpreter between the cosmic forces and the person seeking advice.

Type of Witch #3 Ceremonial Witch

A ceremonial witch believes that ceremonies and rituals are the most important things in her magical life and believes strongly in following a strict set of rules. They will meticulously research their rituals and ceremonies, believing that one wrong step could negate the entire process.

Often ceremonial witches draw their knowledge from more scientific sources such as sacred geometry and quantum mysticism. They will worship the spirit they believe represents the energy they wish to manifest.

Witch Type #4 Correllian Witch

Correllian Wicca or Correllian Nativist tradition was founded in 1879 by Blv. Orpheis Caroline High Correll. She was an American spiritual healer, herbalist, and psychic who claimed descent from a long line of magical families. She claimed her ancestors were the Cherokee Didanvwisgi (Indian American Medicine Men) and Scottish Traditionalist Witches.

She opened the Correll Mother Temple in Illinois on September 4, 1879, and presided over that church until her death in 1940. She believed that the only way to improve the rights and legal standing of Gentiles was through communication and cooperation between different offshoots of paganism. She thought that religion would survive only with a concerted effort against religious imperialism.

Correllian Wicca was not accepted as an offshoot of Wicca until the 1990s. High Priestess LaVeda High-Correll had campaigned for acceptance since the 1970s. She moved the church in a direction of eclecticism and universalism that is used today to embody many Wiccan traditions. Correllianism places great emphasis on philosophical parts of Wicca. It is committed to rituals open to the public.

As of 2015, the Correllian Nativist Church, a legally incorporated church, had around 150,000 members in 114 countries around the world. It is dedicated to the advancement of people who have pagan or neopagan inclinations. The goal is to increase awareness of the religion and improve communication between all parts of the Wiccan world.
