The story of Céline Dion and René Angélil whose age difference was not able to get in the way of their love

After hearing Céline’s voice on a tape sent by one of her brothers, the renowned 38-year-old music entrepreneur René Angélil, invited her to audition in Quebec. From that moment on, René began to manage Céline’s career and pinned all her hopes on her. He even mortgaged her house to finance her debut album in 1981.

Thanks to René’s bold attitude, today Céline Dion is the best-selling Canadian and French-speaking artist of all time.

When Céline was 18 years old, she began to look at René differently and developed romantic feelings for him. At night, she would tuck a picture of her future husband under her pillow, hiding her from the mother she shared the room with.

In her autobiography, the singer wrote: “I was less and less able to hide from myself the fact that I was in love with René; I had all the symptoms. I was in love with a man who couldn’t love, who didn’t want me to love him, who didn’t want to love me.”

Céline and René were always working and traveling together. One day, when they were in Dublin for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 (when Céline won 1st place), instead of a good night kiss on the cheek, René left for something more and, as he himself said, “everything changed”. In an interview, when the singer was asked if she then fell in love with her manager, she revealed: “I was in love a long time before that.”

For several years, the relationship between the two was known only to friends and family, as they feared the public might find it inappropriate. the age gap of 26 years between them.

Before Céline, René was married twice and had three children from his previous marriages. In 1985, when Céline was about 17 years old, he divorced his second wife, Anne-Marie Angélil.

At the age of 19, the singer revealed to her mother that she had romantic feelings for her manager. She was against it at first and he tried to convince his daughter that Rene was unreliable, as he already had two failed marriages and three children.

After they started dating, René won the love of Céline’s 13 siblings and her mother was eventually persuaded. “She had no choice. Love Wins.”

On Céline’s 25th birthday, they got engaged and, through the booklet of their album, The Color of My Love, made their relationship public. On December 17, 1994, Céline and René said “yes” at the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec.

In 1999, 57-year-old René discovered a lump in her throat and the couple learned the devastating news. “When something like that happens to you, it’s very heavy,” Céline opened up in an interview at the time. “But I felt very strong, because I said to myself: ‘Rene needs me maybe for the first time in his life’”.

After treatment, René made a full recovery and the couple renewed their wedding vows in 2000 to celebrate the life they shared.

After many failed attempts to conceive and two minor procedures at a fertility clinic, in 2001, Céline and René had their first bundle of joy, René-Charles Angélil. In 2010, after several IVF treatments, the couple welcomed twins, Eddy and Nelson.

In 2013, when Céline was about to perform live on TV, she returned to her dressing room, where she noticed the devastating face of her husband. That’s when he discovered that René had heard from his doctor that he had throat cancer again.

During her husband’s illness, Céline took care of her lover, doing everything herself. Even though René wanted the singer to continue participating in concerts, she realized she couldn’t do both and took a break from her career to stay beside him until his death in 2016.

In an interview with ABC, Céline opened up about her loss and said: “I don’t live with him physically, but I live with him inside me”.

Throughout their marriage, the two remained together through good and bad times, and most importantly — they kept their vows “until death do us part.” In an interview, Céline revealed the secret of her lasting marriage: “Communication. It is the key to marriage, to children, to anything.”
