The secret to eating sugar without getting fat –

Thinking of cutting down on sugar on your menu to slim your figure? Calm down, you have to be careful. Radically cutting this ingredient from your diet can increase the body’s need for foods rich in carbohydrates and fat. So you don’t run that risk, the secret is to make a healthy switch – for example, use demerara or brown sugar instead of refined sugar and, even so, moderate the amount.

“The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the consumption of sugar that you use in sweet recipes and in coffee does not exceed 10% of the calories consumed in the day”, explains the nutrologist Mauro Fisberg, coordinator of the Center for Eating Difficulties at Instituto Pensi at Hospital Infantil Sabará, in São Paulo. That is, this rule does not apply to sugar naturally present in fruits, fresh vegetables and milk.

And the use of sweeteners? “They are safe and tightly regulated. The doses that can cause any type of side effect are far above what an adult is capable of consuming on a daily basis”, says Fisberg. The doctor also does not consider the ingestion of industrialized drinks (among them, fruit juice, cow’s milk and vegetables) a problem, as long as they have a low sugar content and are interspersed with more natural options.
