The before and after of the cast of “A Próxima Vítima”, a soap opera that premiered more than 25 years ago

A little over 25 years ago, TV Globo aired one of the biggest hits in the history of Brazilian teledramaturgy. The next victim was written by Sílvio de Abreu and is considered one of the best novels of all time. The plot tells the story of the hardworking Ana (Susana Vieira), owner of an Italian canteen, lover of bad character Marcelo (José Wilker) for 20 years. Each chapter immersed viewers in a plot full of intrigue and suspense.

The question “Who is the murderer” (and the story has several murders) was not answered until November 1995, almost eight months after its premiere. In the face of media harassment to discover the villain, Silvio de Abreu was forced to make some changes to the outcome of the story. The author and director Jorge Fernando decided to record three possible endings at 1:00 pm — the telenovela would air at 8:30 pm. The alternate scenes were sent to the network with the chapter already edited and only when the actors entered the studio did they find out who the real killer was. The telenovela was sold to more than 20 countries, including Cuba, the United States, Guatemala, Hungary, Latvia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, Russia, Uruguay and Venezuela.
