Raquel has been a tattoo artist for three years, during which time she sought some specialization. Her intention was to delve deeper into the art of tattooing, seeking a greater meaning for her own work. The search for specialization, in Raquel’s understanding, reflected her desire for a better understanding of her own profession and to give her clients meaning, an emotional fulfilment. Since then, she began to notice a feeling totally different from anything she had ever felt in the tattooing exercise. So, together with his wife, she began to research everything she could about scar tattooing. So much study resulted in a specialization and, as of March 2021, Raquel decided that she would no longer tattoo intact skin, dedicating all her time to scars. She had finally found a life purpose in her work.

The women who come to her to get tattoos on their scars have their insecurities. Raquel, however, makes an appointment first to evaluate each case and clarify important details of her work. The artist is keen to convey confidence and security, so that, after this consultation, her clients usually want to get the tattoo as soon as possible.

We asked Raquel to tell us how the designs are chosen. She explained to us that she listens to her customers’ ideas and also shares her own with them. After all, she has technical knowledge about the symbology of feelings and can give good suggestions on how to represent the clients’ desires through her art.

As he values ​​the fluidity of his clients’ bodies, he rarely uses decals. He prefers to draw directly on the body, harmonizing his art with each biotype. This makes the tattoo extremely personalized. The artistic design must fit the scar perfectly, giving a light and unique visual effect.

The challenges that Raquel accepted to face in her daily life are not few. For her, all the jobs “are very challenging because it’s always a surprise and no scar is the same”. Even so, Raquel remembers that one of the most challenging tattoos was one about the marks of a bariatric surgery, as there were many and she needed to develop an art that would not be heavy in that area. Another big challenge was covering burns across the back of her legs.

When clients finish the sessions, it is difficult to put into words the emotions they feel when seeing the result. But Raquel sums it all up in one word: deliverance! As an artist, the tattoo artist ends up becoming intimate with many clients who pass by her, after all, it takes a lot of trust and intimacy to allow someone to touch her scar.

But the artist touches much more than her clients’ scars. It touches on the story of each one and becomes part of the transformation of possible traumas into a beautiful and admirable art. Her work takes the place of a scar that previously brought bad memories and attracted unpleasant looks. It is inevitable that Raquel gets closer to her clients. “I end up getting attached and even becoming friends with them”.

Of course, Raquel doesn’t intend to stop there. She has several dreams and one of them is to specialize other professionals around the world in tattooing scars, artists who have a humanized view of their clients. In addition, she also dreams of opening a studio specializing in scars, with several artists like her, providing psychological and spiritual care, seeking a deeper understanding of each case.

And that’s not all. Raquel has plans to tell her story in a book, including the real cases of women who freed themselves from trauma through the art of their scars.
