Study says you may have a specific personality trait if you prefer your coffee without sugar

Researchers, working with the University of Innsbruck in Austria, surveyed nearly 1,000 Americans about their food tastes. In 2 different studies, they asked people about their tastes in sweet, sour, salty and bitter foods and drinks.

The researchers cross-referenced taste preferences with self-reported data from 4 different personality surveys designed to indicate antisocial personality traits such as psychopathy, sadism, narcissism and aggression.

When the scientists assessed how much subjects liked bitter foods and drinks, they found that those who said they enjoyed bitterness were more likely to exhibit antisocial personality traits, but not those who liked specific bitter foods like black coffee, tonic water or radishes.

“The results suggest that how much people like bitter foods and drinks is stably related to how dark their personality is,” wrote researchers Christina Sagiogloua and Tobias Greitemeyerb. They cautioned, however, that research linking taste preferences to personality traits “is still in its early stages” and that, overall, the “evidence is still sparse.”

Senior panelist Megan Willis, who was not associated with the Innsbruck study, pointed out that “Psychopathy is conceptualized as a personality trait that spans a continuum, meaning that those who exhibit the trait are not necessarily the most calculating criminals.” .

The study does not in any way suggest that everyone who has a preference for bitter taste is a psychopath. What he found was a weak positive relationship between psychopathy and a generalized propensity for bitter things. Willis says that in his “point of view, this connection is insignificant compared to other, more well-established predictors of psychopathy, such as a person’s genes or gender.”

In a more recent interview with Health MagazineRoosevelt University professor Steven Myers shared Willis’s sentiments: “The findings need to be interpreted with caution, and the results would need to be replicated by others before they can merit attention.”
