Spanish donkey has become a “therapist” for the sick and the elderly (and just seeing him will do your heart good)

Animals, be they cats, dogs, birds or insects, are part of our daily lives. But some end up gaining more importance than others. This is exactly the case with a donkey from the community of Huelva, Spain. Thanks to an association, the animal has become a kind of “doctor” who goes from door to door visiting the sick and elderly to cheer them up.

The association ”The Happy Donkey” has long endeavored to highlight what can be achieved with teamwork between people and one of the shyest animals in the animal kingdom, the donkey. And among its most dedicated “employees”, there is one named Magallanes, who was trained for months to become a “therapist” and brighten up his patients’ days.

Magallanes was able to alleviate the bad days of seniors with Alzheimer’s, reduced mobility, patients suffering from fibromyalgia, and hospitalized and disabled children. This adorable animal behaves sensitively towards its patients and association members.

That is why it is possible to find him in nursing homes, being the center of attention for the elderly, who risk pet him or give him a cookie as a reward for their behavior.

The encounter between elderly people with Alzheimer’s and Magallanes is particularly revealing, since patients interact with the animal, which ends up being a kind of stimulus for the brain reconnect with reality, even if momentarily. Very soon, a new therapist named Chiclana will join the team, and both will pass through the institutions that need her services.

Magallanes’ visits are free, as all expenses are paid by the aforementioned association “O burrinho Feliz”. The institution is run solely by volunteers who, with their donations of money or time, take this initiative forward and energize the hearts and minds of the people who need it most.

And while these seniors, children and patients seem to have the better part of the pie, they are not the only ones who benefit from work. Magallanes also wins. The association does not only seek to give a good quality of life for peoplehow do you want the beloved donkeys to re-incorporate into society, within the framework of mutual respect and shared work.

In addition to the visits of the “Doctor donkey”, the association carries out other activities that it puts at the service of citizens, such as those of the “Burrinho firefighter”. The Firefighter Donkey Unit was founded taking advantage of the vocation Natural of Magallanes’ friends to take the dry grass (by eating it, of course) and thus protect the Environment from fires, especially during the summer.

They can also be seen accompanied by volunteers in Star Wars costumes recreating wild adventures for adults and children.
