A truly noble and selfless gesture

Actress and producer Salma Hayek arrived in Sierra Leone in September 2008 on a humanitarian mission. While visiting a hospital, the actress met a woman who had recently had a baby, but who had no milk. As the actress’s daughter had turned about a year old at that time, she decided to breastfeed the child, without caring about the people who were filming the scene.

Salma does her best to help her daughter become a generous person.

After this episode, the actress admitted that she had mixed feelings, that is, she thought that somehow she could have been disloyal to her own daughter. However, she thought that she wouldn’t mind sharing her milk, so she said: “Actually, I think my daughter would be very proud to be able to share her milk.” The actress also stated that she will do everything possible for her daughter to become a generous and caring person. “I think it’s the best thing I can give her as a mother,” added the actress.

Generosity and altruism, strong features in the Hayek family

Salma explained that the gesture she performed in the African country was an old tradition in her family. Indeed, many years ago, in a Mexican village, her great-grandmother saved her starving baby from a crying stranger. She began to breastfeed the child and she quickly stopped crying.

Breastfeeding: A Choice, Not a Stigma

Salma stated that the decision to breastfeed that woman’s child was also an attempt to lessen the stigma surrounding breastfeeding. Through this act of kindness, she ended up showing that women should have a choice and shouldn’t be afraid of their bodies.
