Safari Hat | Straw

The Safari hat is characterized by a medium to large brim with a central crown (depression in the middle with the sides of the crown raised). Generally constructed from durable and lightweight materials, such as straw, the model has press buttons on the sides that allow the flaps to be loosened or secured, and an external adjustable elastic cord for the neck.

The characteristics of the safari hat have undergone many changes during its long evolution; however, the modern model (as it is described and known today) has the following characteristics: Fedora shape, no internal lines and rounded edge, medium width.

The story goes that the Safari hat was originally made from the dried pith of swamp plants in India. By the 1850s, the model had become a standard accessory for Europeans in Africa, parts of Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Several European armed forces even wore it in 1870 in their colonies located in India and Africa, although the hat became more associated with the British military. The hats worn by British soldiers were originally covered with white cloth, but during the War of 1879, soldiers discovered that this made them stand out as targets – and so they began dyeing the cloth with tea.

It was from the 1930s onwards that the safari hat began to be worn by civilians, who used the item as a sun hat in white and khaki. Often the model is used during safaris in Africa and India. In the United States, Safari hats were often worn in the subtropics, and reinforced their fame with President Teddy Roosevelt.
