Research suggests nearly half of grandparents have a favorite grandchild

For many children, the biggest dream is to have siblings, which in most cases is a reason for great joy — as long as you don’t have to fight with them for the attention of adults. A psychologist concluded that making a child feel special boosts their self-confidence and self-esteem. As we all know, grandfathers and grandmothers have a lot of love to give, but it can happen that one of the grandchildren ends up becoming the sole recipient of all their affection.

We, from awesome.club, we decided to investigate the issue of “grandparent favoritism” in depth, and we made several discoveries. Follow:

Some grandparents are more discreet about their favorites

The survey asked 1,111 grandmothers and grandfathers whether or not they had a favorite grandchild, and 42% of them admitted that they did. Meanwhile, 9% said they were undecided. Interestingly, most respondents did not feel guilty about preferring a particular grandchild, nor did they mind confessing to the fact.

51% said “don’t be ashamed of having a favourite”. 66% said their favorite grandchild’s siblings “definitely” didn’t know which one was at the top of the list. And yet, 42% revealed that not even their favorite grandchild was aware of this condition.

Grandparents know what they look for in their favorite grandchild

The grandparents participating in the survey also provided some data that can help you discover whether you are the “golden” grandchild. They stated the following about their children’s children:

58% said that their favorite grandchild is usually happy, and manages to “make them laugh more than their siblings”. Fortunately, for 62% of them, it doesn’t matter who is the most beautiful grandchild. The appearance of the grandchildren has no weight in your preference. That’s quite a relief, isn’t it? 67% said their favorite grandchild is the one who shows “unconditional love for them and shows affection”. As we suspected all along, grandparents want attention!

This shows us that there is a way to become your grandparents’ “favorite”. Hope is not lost!

gender doesn’t matter

According to the survey, we all have the chance to be our grandparents’ favorite, since, for them, it makes no difference whether the grandchild is female or male. Well, actually girls seem to have a slight advantage, but it’s not significant.

66% denied that their favorite grandchild was the only female. 72% said their favorite grandchild was not the only male.

Therefore, if you are the only daughter among male siblings, you are 6% more likely to gain more affection from grandparents, compared to the others.

Furthermore, another study corroborated the theory by indicating that “the gender of grandchildren does not affect” the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.

They made a final decision

If you’ve decided to fight to become the dearest of your grandparents, it’s best to start making the effort as soon as possible, as they don’t seem open to changing your mind. According to the survey, 70% of participants said they do not change their minds when it comes to their favorite grandchild. So we can say that if you don’t captivate grandparents early on, the chances of being able to do it after several years become very small.

Even so, perhaps their grandparents echo the 49% who said they didn’t have a favorite grandchild. Anyway, the good thing is to enjoy all the love that our parents’ parents have to give us. Enjoy!
