Representation systems: the key to efficient communication

An individual’s representation system constitutes his or her map of the world.. It is the way in which he interprets reality, the language he uses to express what happens inside and outside himself.

Representation systems: visual

People with a visual representation system process and retrieve information in the form of images. They interpret, remember and express themselves through visual images that are formed in their mind.

For this reason, they have a great capacity for abstraction and can absorb and relate large amounts of information in an agile and detailed way. This means that your communication is fast and fluid. They usually use a high tone and various gestures.

When learning, they prefer to have visual support (books, notes…) than to listen to someone else’s explanation. Besides, When they are immersed in an activity, noise bothers and distracts them.. They are, for example, those people who need to turn off the radio when they are going to park.

How to communicate?

If you have detected that your interlocutor uses visual maps, try to speak to him in the same language. For it communicate in an energetic and colorful way. Be descriptive, try to help him form an image of what you are telling. Also, try to use the codes of this system using phrases like:

Representation systems: auditory

These people interpret, remember and express themselves through sounds. They learn best by listening, speaking, and verbally repeating concepts.

Additionally, your mind processes sequentially: you don’t move on to another idea without finishing the first. Thus, They usually speak slowly, orderly and monotonously. They barely gesture, keeping their hands in the same position. They focus a lot on taking care of the words so that the message is clear.

How to communicate?

To speak the same language as a hearing person you have to carefully choose the tone and terms you use. Communicate clearly, orderly and chronologically.

Try to use a medium speed in speaking, which allows them to delve deeper into the idea you are conveying. Don’t jump from one idea to another quickly, haphazardly, as they won’t feel comfortable. and they won’t be able to follow you.

Representation systems: kinesthetic

Kinesthetic people They remember, interpret and make decisions based on their sensations, emotions and feelings. They are relaxed, intuitive individuals and very in touch with their body.

Thus, They use a lot of physical contact in their interactions and learn best by doing that seeing or listening. They speak slowly and softly, referring especially to their own internal state. That is, they will refer to how they feel or felt, rather than what objectively happened.

How to communicate?

To communicate with them effectively you have to speak slowly and warmly. Focus on transmitting your sensations and emotions to connect with the other. Use body contact and use expressions such as:
