Read birds as omens and signs

In 2010, I became friends with the crows in my neighborhood. Every year there is at least one new baby crow that I can introduce myself to.

The Long History of Reading Birds as Omens and Signs

Since ancient times, people have looked to the sky for signs, and since birds fly, it makes sense that people would perceive birds as messengers of the gods or fate. After all, a bird’s-eye view is significantly more omniscient than an earth-based perspective. Birds know what the world looks like from 30,000 feet; You’ve seen the insides of clouds, so it makes odd sense to seek bird’s perspective.

Augury – the art of interpreting birds as omens – predates the ancient Romans. An “omen” is a Latin term for the messages birds can convey. An “augur” (a word meaning both omen and a who sees an omen) would “take the patronage” by looking at “aves” (birds) and “reading” their appearance and behavior. These auspices (bird signs) were sometimes auspicious (lucky) and sometimes unfortunate.

If you say the words “promise” and “auspicious promise” out loud, you can hear their relationship. The language underscores the long history of the belief that birds and happiness are linked and that one can look to birds for guidance in determining which steps to take in life.

But not only the ancient Romans “read” birds. Ornithomancy, a modern term for augury, has been practiced around the world since the earliest records. It is featured in many Native American stories and legends and is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. Countless cultures have myths about clever, wise birds that converse with gods and offer insight to humans.

Anyway, people have been reading birds for a very, very long time. If you’re looking to start practicing the ancient art of augury, this article will help you get started.

What does it mean when a bird…

What does it mean when a bird knocks on my window?

Birds do this all the time: they see their reflection and freak out, assuming it’s a rival bird invading their territory. It’s usually the territorial types that do it, and usually in the spring when they’re feeling really boisterous, but the knock on the window is hard to ignore. It’s easy to think that the bird is trying to get your attention.

A bird pecking at a window is definitely an opportunity to stop and pay attention. What have you forgotten or forgotten? What neglected duties need to be done? Which loose ends need to be tied? Take this as an opportunity to sit down and search your brain to find out what or who you’ve been missing.

What does it mean when a bird poops on me or my car?

Most of us would be upset if a bird pooped on us. It’s hard not to take something like this personally, especially when you have to clean it up (that’s what I call adding insult to injury). You may be wondering if this bird has a vendetta against you or an angry message from above. You may have offended the universe in some way, and this is its revenge. Maybe it’s an angry ancestor trying to express dissatisfaction with a mess you’re making in life.

On the other hand, you can agree with all those happy optimists who insist that bird droppings are a sign of good luck. This is probably the healthiest interpretation since shit happens after all.

What if a bird slams into my window?

The terrifying swoop of a bird banging against your window is a sign you just can’t ignore. What it could mean:

You may encounter some obstacle: emotional, mental, or physical. Perhaps it’s a sign that you’re going in the wrong direction in some aspect of your life: personally, professionally, or interpersonally. Perhaps you are moving too fast or too quickly and need to slow down. It could be a reminder of the obstacles you face and a reminder that not all options are open or that timing is everything. It can represent a rough transition, a trap, or a hidden trap. It could represent the end of a reality, relationship, or belief system and the beginning of something new. Or it could simply mean that the poor bird didn’t see the jar. Consider applying strips of tape to keep it from happening again.

What does it mean when a bird flies into my house?

Most cultures have superstitious beliefs that when a bird flies into your home, it is a message from above: God, fate, the universe, or your dead ancestors are trying to tell you something. Many believe it’s a bad omen, but many more believe it’s just a reminder to keep your eyes open (and close the window!).

A blue jay flew into my house the other day looking for food…then forgot how to get out. It made a terrible ruckus, fluttering about and banging its head against the glass to escape. I grabbed a towel, threw it over the bird and then brought it back outside. I felt sorry because I know how it feels to unknowingly fall headlong into a trap you can’t get out of, such as a dead end, a toxic relationship, or some other mistake. You think you’re about to do something great and then suddenly you find yourself in a completely wrong situation that you can’t get out of. I took this situation as a timely object lesson and was grateful for the reminder.

Auspices: Bird Signs and What They Might Mean

In ancient Italy, not all birds in the sky were considered meaningful signs or messages from gods. They observed two species of birds: oscines and alien

Oscines (ravens, crows, owls and chickens)whose bird songs conveyed greater meanings, could be interpreted as auspicious (luck) or not, depending on where they sang from in relation to the augur.
Alites (eagles, vultures, and others) were the ones whose actions and flight patterns were meaningfully interpreted.

Depending on what time of year the bird was heard or observed, every sound and movement made by these birds had a different interpretation.

Ex tripudiis– the dances of birds – were often read to guide military expeditions. The troops would bring chickens to war with them for this purpose, scattering food on the ground and freeing the birds from their cages when guidance was needed. If the hens did not come out to eat, crowed, flapped or flew away, these were taken as bad omens, but if even one came out and dropped some food on the ground, this was a very lucky omen.

What does that mean for you?

Let the ancient Romans guide you. When reading the sky by omen, consider the following:

What sounds does the bird make? Would you characterize the sound as sad, happy, upset, haunting, scared, sad, or haunting? What emotions or memories does this sound evoke?
What is the bird doing? Is it flying, strutting, watching, fluttering, swimming, chasing, or sleeping, and what meaning can you derive from that action?
What kind of bird is it? Is it a water bird, songbird, bird of prey or scavenger? What meaning can you derive from the type and does it have a special meaning for you?
What color is the bird? Consult the color meaning table below.
How many birds are there? Is it a flock, a family or a single bird? What meaning can you give to this number again?

Is it bad luck to see a black bird?

Black creatures have a bad reputation. Black sheep, black cats, and black birds (mainly crows and ravens) all have negative associations. Although many people assume that black is bad, this consensus does not prove that these things are inherently malicious or dangerous. Rather, the belief that black things are always bad is evidence that people are lazy and want simple answers about things.

It would be very nice – and practical! – if only we had to get outside, look up at the sky and “read” the birds flying above us to find answers and guidance in life, especially when black always means bad and white always means good (and wait a moment Time to note the inherent racism of this comment). But of course nothing is that simple.

Seeing a bird will not give you a clear answer. It’s not a magic 8-ball (and who thinks that’s really magic?). A bird’s color doesn’t necessarily make a significant difference. But just as reading tarot cards, studying astrology, and taking personality tests offer people opportunities to understand themselves more deeply, so looking at nature can do the same. Think of augury as just another means of introspection and reflection.

With this in mind and from this perspective, perhaps the color of a bird could have meaning. Below is a table of different ways to interpret a bird’s color.

What could the color of a bird symbolize?

As with the action and type of bird, the color of the bird you see can matter. Also, the seer’s personal association with a particular color should always be considered.

Questions to ask to discover the meaning of a bird

There are two types of bird signs: imperative (wanted, solicited or solicited) and oblative (unasked; comes out of the blue like a bolt of lightning!). So ask yourself: is the bird bringing you an unsolicited message from the universe? Or does it answer a question you asked – explicitly or implicitly?

Does the bird bring you an unsolicited message from the…
