Life is increasingly technological and, currently, a large part of people access websites, emails, conversation and relationship applications on a daily basis. According to 2017 surveys, almost 75% of Brazilians are connected to the internet and more than 90% of these users have access to some social network.
Knowing this, a trio of psychologists created a page to advertise their clinic, using humor to publicize and relax, as many people find it difficult to seek therapy. Thiago Pigato, Francis Souza and Flávio Komonski decided to win over their audience with laughter and good humor. Then came the page that made this series of hilarious photos with products found in the supermarket.
O awesome.club will show this group of psychologists who got together to play a game that combines photo montages with funny phrases, to encourage people to become aware of the need to seek psychotherapy.
How it all started and the first posts
The idea started about two years ago on social media, with serious posts with phrases from scholars in the area and self-help messages. But after a few months, the team realized that they were more successful when they posted relaxed phrases. They are easy to assimilate jokes that break the ice of the formality of psychological care and help people to seek help.
The page receives many likes with each post and many people send private messages to ask for guidance on how to seek therapy. Organizers say they direct people to look for psychologists in the city where they live and teach them how to get a qualified professional to do so. In emergency cases, they give a brief word of comfort and make the referral.
Flávio, one of the psychologists, says that there was already a person who needed urgent help and they found a therapist for care. The possibility of being able to help is very gratifying, he says. They realized the need to talk more about the subject, because many people have no idea how life can flow better when we dedicate ourselves to treating mental health.
They also ran a campaign called “Talk to me” which followed parallel to Yellow September, working on the theme of suicide prevention. Flávio says that it was very gratifying to talk about this delicate subject and that at the time the page had about 200 messages a day asking for help from people from all over Brazil.
Despite receiving a lot of criticism regarding the seriousness of the page, the organizers claim that the posts are created to cause laughter without turning the psychological problems into some kind of joke. They understand that laughing at their own condition shows that you are not the only one who has a problem and that you are more normal than you might think; it’s a way to empathize and help you relax.
They say that they try to make room for all types of patients, including people who live in situations of social vulnerability, the LGBT population and people with disabilities, for example. They even have services in Libras and offices with an adapted entrance for those with physical disabilities, among other innovations.
