Proven: yoga loses weight! – GOOD SHAPE

Think of physical activities that can help you shed those extra pounds. Walking, running, swimming? Okay, they are good allies. But I bet you never imagined that yoga could be on that list. Know that it has been proven that the Indian practice, which emerged about 5,000 years ago, works to control anxiety, the bandit that makes you devour a box of chocolates while waiting for the call from the cat you met at that party.

Although not all the benefits of yoga have been studied by doctors and scientists, teachers and practitioners never tire of boasting, for example, that the activity stimulates metabolism and regulates hormone production. “The asanas (postures) make a kind of massage on the thyroid and the stimulation of this gland tends to cause weight loss”, says Fernanda Neis, professor at the University of Yôga, in São Paulo (SP).

Also, the calorie burn cannot be overlooked when it comes to the more vigorous styles. “It is estimated that 500 calories are spent in one hour of power yoga, an amount similar to a more strenuous step class, for advanced students”, says Andrea Loschiavo, 28 years old, yoga teacher at the Life Sport gym, in São Paulo ( SP). Gentle styles, such as hatha yoga, burn 225 calories, slightly less than brisk walking (350 calories).

more self control

Andrea fell in love with the Indian practice a year ago, when she was studying physical education at college, and decided to specialize in order to be able to teach. “I lost 3 kilos with yoga. I never imagined this would happen,” she says. She attributes the weight loss to greater emotional control. “I ate right at meals, but attacked chocolate in the afternoon and evening. The greater the rush of my day, the more I got out of control and took it out on sweets. Yoga has made me more balanced and resistant to gluttony,” she says.

Jewelry designer Renata Rea Knese, 30, had a similar experience. Effortlessly, she has shed 3 pounds since she started doing yoga twice a week. “My anxiety has decreased a lot”, says Renata, who tried to be disciplined at the table, but could not always control herself. “On Fridays, I go out to dinner, and when I do yoga before I go out, I eat just enough so I don’t feel hungry, no matter how good the restaurant is. Today, I don’t seek exaggerated pleasure in food, ”she says. She, who has never been sedentary – practices dancing and walking – is also happy with the muscle tone she has achieved. “My body became harder and more beautiful.”

mastered anxiety

Renata wasn’t alone: who hasn’t found themselves eating without feeling hungry? “Anxiety makes us overindulge in food”, explains Marcos Rojo, professor of physical education at the University of São Paulo (USP), specialized in yoga at the Kaivalyadhama school, in India, and coordinator of the postgraduate yoga course from Faculdades Metropolitanas Unidas (UniFMU), in São Paulo. In Rojo’s opinion, the rush, the many commitments and activities and the excess of stimuli of modern life can generate dissatisfaction, discounted at the table. “It’s easy to find pleasure in eating,” he says.

Rojo also remembers how frustrating it can be to make an intense physical effort and replace the calories burned in the blink of an eye. “An hour of walking on the treadmill burns around 350 calories and just a slice of pie with cream is enough for you to get it all back”, says Rojo, who believes that very intense exercises can cause even more mental agitation. “Gymnastics helps to lose weight because it burns calories, but anxiety control is only achieved with introspective practices, which put the student in contact with herself, such as yoga and tai chi chuan”, she defends.

For Shotaro Shimada, a teacher for 45 years in São Paulo, the practice acts in a fundamental process for weight loss, which is the change of mental attitude. “As yoga does not have automated movements and requires you to maintain postures and breathing, it ends up training mind control, discipline and concentration,” he explains. With self-control developed, it is even easier to change your eating habits. You know that last piece of pizza that keeps “staring” at you? Because it won’t be so difficult to leave it in the form.

overcome obstacles

“The complexity of the postures reproduces everyday situations”, says Anderson Allegro, a power yoga teacher from São Paulo. In asanas, whenever a difficulty arises – standing on one leg, for example -, the student is instructed to keep breathing flowing normally. Making a parallel with life, when we are faced with a problem, the tendency is to hold our breath, increasing anxiety even more. Already a full, slow and deep breath helps to appease the mind. “Those who take the practice seriously learn to face challenges in a stimulating way, as obstacles that can be overcome and not as a divine punishment, which is a common and recurring thought every time we are put against the wall”, says Allegro.

The case of Vivian Casalenovo, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, is proof of that. “She was on a diet, but she couldn’t lose weight. It only took two months of yoga to lose 5 kilos,” she says. The explanation? “I began to better face the challenges and realize that they can be overcome. From there, resisting the treats got easier.” And then? Excited to try it out?
