São Cristóvão is known to be the protector of travelers and drivers. Did you know that he started his trajectory wanting to serve the most powerful man on Earth? Only what he didn’t know that his story would have a twist making him a Christian. Get to know now the story of São Cristóvão and what he represents for his faithful!

Originally the name of São Cristóvão was Reprobo and there are no records before his adult life. He was described as a very tall man, towering over most men and with unusual strength. For these characteristics, he won the position of soldier of the King of Canaan, but this position did not please him for a long time.

With a desire to serve someone more powerful, he went on his way in pursuit of such a feat. After finding out about the demon, he went in search of him in the middle of the desert. When he found him, he walked by his side for a long time, until he noticed that at one point the demon deviated from the path when he found a cross.

At this moment, Reprobus realized that there was a King more powerful than the devil. In order to learn more about Jesus Christ, who was the figure associated with the cross, the warrior became a Christian. After this decision he sat by the river to help travelers cross the river, carrying people on his shoulders, hoping to find Christ without having to do many prayers and fasts.

On a certain stormy night, a child appeared in the river to cross, when putting it on his shoulders, he realized that she weighed more than normal. Even with the difficulty he followed the path to the other side of the river. When he left the child safely on the shore, she revealed his true identity: Jesus Christ.

After the feat, he understood that no matter the difficulty, as long as he believes in Christ, he will cross the obstacles without ceasing to believe in his existence. From that event onwards he was known as the bearer of Christ and took the name of Cristóvão (meaning the bearer of Christ), the patron saint of travelers and drivers.

Little is known about the origin of São Cristóvão, the story of his adult life is that he wanted to serve the King of Kings, until he met Jesus Christ on one of his river crossings.

Some legends point out that Saint Christopher, after witnessing Jesus Christ, traveled in order to evangelize people who crossed his path. When he arrived in a region called Lycia, he continued to share his testimony with the Christians who were there.

Upon spreading this news, Saint Christopher was arrested and forced by the emperor to give some kind of sacrifice. Christopher refused and did not give in to the temptations sent to him. When they realized that he would not give in to the sovereign’s whims, they sentenced him to death. Eventually he was arrested and beheaded.

In the Eastern Orthodox Church it is possible to find the image of the saint with a dog’s head in place of the human head. The canine head in question is associated with the god Anubis of Egypt.

Already in Christianity we find a tall man with a child on his shoulders. The tunic that surrounds him represents hope, due to the fact that Christopher hopes to serve Jesus Christ.

The apron that appears over his tunic, represents the humility for helping people to cross the river, and he did this service without complaining. His red cloak is associated with his martyr. When he stood in front of the powerful, he did not lie about the existence of Jesus Christ, thus dying in his name.

The image of the baby Jesus on the shoulders of Saint Christopher represents all the times he crossed the river helping travelers to arrive safely on the bank. The globe he holds represents the weight of the world, which he can share with Jesus Christ. It means that problems can weigh heavily on life, but when you believe in Jesus Christ, He helps with the burden.

Saint Christopher is a saint who represents the crossing, even if it is heavy and difficult, he is the representation that when you believe in Jesus Christ and share your anguish with him, it will be possible to face obstacles even if they seem impossible, and thus reach to the other side.

Soon, he is the protector of those who need to face the roads to earn their livelihood. That’s why it’s common to see drivers devoted to São Cristóvão and also those people who need to travel with a certain frequency. They know that they can find the necessary comfort in the patron saint.

Drivers and travelers often ask São Cristóvão for help, this happens because he is responsible for keeping trips safe. In the same way that he slung the baby Jesus on his shoulders in the stormy night with the rioting river water, he intercedes on behalf of motorists and travelers.

His protection makes it possible for them to arrive safely at their destination, just as Jesus arrived safely on the other side of the river bank. By asking São Cristóvão for help, you will be ensuring your safety and that of other people traveling with you.
