Who was Saint Charbel?

Saint Charbel was a Lebanese Catholic monk who lived in the 19th century (born in 1829 and died in 1898). His original name is Youssef Antún Makhlouf. At the age of twenty-three he left his house and entered the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfuq, there adopting the name of a Syrian martyr, Charbel.

He was a man very devoted to Catholicism who lived as a religious of the Maronite Order (of Saint Maron) in the Annaya convent for much of his life.

It is known that Saint Charbel lived a very hermitage life, dedicated to prayer, silence but above all to work. He worked in the convent’s fields to earn his bread.

After he died, Saint Charbel gained recognition, as his body remained intact, as if it had been mummified for a long period of time and that was considered a miracle. It is for this miracle that he was beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977, since that year being the first saint in Lebanon.

Saint Charbel is normally depicted wearing a black hooded cloak. One of the most famous images is where Charbel appears with a long white beard and looking at the ground, as if he were praying.
