History of Our Lady of Aparecida

Devotion to Our Lady of Conceição Aparecida, better known as “Our Lady of Aparecida”, has a very special meaning. It appeared in Brazil when a group of fishermen, after several futile attempts, asked for divine intercession, but instead of a fish they caught a small image of Our Lady of Conceição Aparecida made of terracotta. The title of “Aparecida” derives from the verb “to appear”, as it was at a time of great need that the fishermen found her and realized that this event indicated a sign of the Virgin’s intercession. The image had a dark color and was blackened due to the type of material it was made with and because it was lost in the river.

This miracle occurred in the second half of October in 1717, when the Count of Assumar and governor of the infantry of São Paulo and Minas de Ouro, Dom Pedro de Almeida, was passing through the city of Guaratinguetá, located in the Paraíba valley, during a trip to Rich village.

The residents of Guaratinguetá decided to celebrate a big festival in honor of Dom Pedro de Almeida and, although it was not a good time for fishing, they launched their nets into the Paraíba River, in an attempt to get fish for the event. Fishermen Domingos Garcia, João Alves and Filipe Pedroso prayed asking for Our Lady’s intercession. After several attempts, they continued downstream until reaching the port of Itaguaçu. When they were about to abandon fishing, João Alves cast the nets again and instead of a fish, they collected the body of a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, but without the head. Once again casting the net, they caught the head, which fit perfectly onto the statue’s body.

After both parts were recovered, the image of the Virgin Aparecida became so heavy that they could not move it. The fishermen then caught so much fish that they were forced to return to the port because their boats almost sank. This was the first miracle attributed to Our Lady of Aparecida.

On September 8, 1904, the image was crowned with a crown of jewels donated by Princess Isabel and dressed in a cloak embroidered in gold and other precious jewels, thus recognizing her royalty and powerful protection. After the coronation, the Holy Father granted the Sanctuary of Aparecida a special service and mass in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida and indulgences for pilgrims who visit the sanctuary. On April 29, 1908, the church received the title of minor basilica, consecrated on September 5, 1909.

On December 17, 1928, the population that formed around the church on the heights of Morro dos Coqueiros became a city, taking the name of Aparecida. Our Lady of Conceição Aparecida was proclaimed Queen and Patroness of Brazil on July 16, 1930, by decree of Pope Pius XI. With the enormous increase in pilgrims, the need for a larger place for the crowd of faithful arose. In 1955 construction began on a new basilica.

On July 4, 1980, Pope John Paul II, during his visit to Brazil, consecrated the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida and declared it the largest Marian sanctuary in the world.
