What is the history of São Roque like?

It is said that the Frenchman Roque de Montpellier was born with the mark of a red cross on his chest, in 1295. Throughout his life, he was an example of charity, helping especially those in need with serious illnesses.

He contracted the plague and took refuge in the forest to avoid infecting other people. A dog found him and started bringing him bread. His owner followed him and found the saint, who recovered and went to Italy, where he died in 1327.

His canonization took place between 1590 and 1591, by Pope Gregory XIV, being celebrated on August 16th. He is the patron saint of invalids, dogs and surgeons, as well as protector against the plague.

Help us to escape the contagion of vices and sins to which we live exposed, so that, recovering the purity of conscience, we may deserve the continuation of Your Grace; and strengthened by this, we can better resist bodily illnesses, contagions and pestilences, to better fulfill our duties and deserve the salvation of our souls.
