Prayer for the Dead can honor and calm the heart

All Souls’ Day is celebrated on November 2nd. The religious holiday is dedicated to prayers and tributes to those who have passed away. A prayer for the Dead comes as a way to calm the heart, send light and bring back good memories. It can be done either on a specific date or on any day of the week, whenever you feel like it.

How to say prayers for the deceased?

The tip is to stay in a quiet place, where you will not be interrupted. If you want, you can light a candle and/or incense. Close your eyes and take deep breaths to try to relax your body and mind. Think of the deceased without resentment, hurt or attachment in your heart. What do you think about remembering happy moments you shared? Read the prayer for the Deadwith faith and gratitude:

“With a painful heart I remember, before the Lord, my dear family and friends who have passed away. May God’s will be done! As Job teaches us, God gave, God took away, blessed be his holy name! Death is the condition of every mortal. It’s the way of life. But it hurts our hearts. I know that crying is good and does not mean we are against God. We accept his divine will.

In a Christian feeling of charity I pray for my deceased. I offer the sacrifice of my prayer for them, which is the only place I can find them and the only thing I can do for them. If you need my prayer, I ask that the Lord welcome you into his home. May they have the joy of being in Heaven. May my suffering and my prayer help in their purification. So, when you arrive at the house of the Lord, you can intercede and pray for us. Amen!”

Prayer for the Dead

“Almighty Lord, may your mercy be poured out upon our brothers who have just left the Earth! May your light shine in their eyes! Take them out of the darkness, open their eyes and their ears! May the good spirits surround you and make you hear their words of peace and hope!

Lord, however unworthy we may be, we have the boldness to beg your merciful indulgence in favor of this brother of ours whom you have just called from exile. Make his return be that of the prodigal son. Forgot, oh! My God, the mistakes I have committed, so that you can only remember the good that I was able to do! Your justice is immutable, we know that, but your love is immense!

We beg you to soften your justice, the source of goodness that emanates from you! May light shine for you, my brother who has just left Earth! May the good spirits of the Lord come to your aid, involving you and helping you shake off your earthly chains!

See and understand the greatness of our Lord; submit yourself without complaining to his justice; but never despair of his mercy. Brother! May a deep examination of your past open the doors of the future for you, making you understand the faults you left behind, as well as the work that awaits you, so that you can repair them! May God forgive you, and may his good spirits support and encourage you! Your brothers on Earth will pray for you, and ask you to pray for them.”

Prayer for the soul to rest in peace

“O God, who through the death and Resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ revealed to us the enigma of death, calmed our anguish and made the seed of eternity that you yourself planted in us flourish:
Grant your deceased sons and daughters the definitive peace of your presence. Wipe the tears from our eyes and give us all the joy of hope in the promised Resurrection.

This we ask of you, through Jesus Christ your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. May all those who sought the Lord with a sincere heart and who died in the hope of the Resurrection rest in peace. Amen.”

Prayer for deceased to find the light

“Holy Father, eternal and almighty God, we ask you for (name of the deceased) whom you called out of this world. Give him happiness, light and peace. May he/she, having passed through death, participate in the fellowship of your saints in eternal light, as you promised Abraham and his descendants. May his soul suffer nothing, and may you deign to resurrect him with your saints on the day of resurrection and reward. Forgive him his sins so that he may reach immortal life in the eternal kingdom with you.

Through Jesus Christ, your Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

Pray: 1 Our Father and 1 Hail Mary.

Give him, Lord, eternal rest and shine your light for him.
Amen.”

Prayer of eternal rest

“Lord, I pray for Your blessings of light for my loved ones who live in the spiritual world. May my words and thoughts addressed to them help them, so that they can continue in their spiritual life, working for good wherever they are.

I wait with resignation for the moment to reunite with them in the Spiritual Homeland, as I know that our separation is temporary.

But, when they have Your permission, may they come to meet me to wipe away my tears of longing.”
