Physicist Creates A Sanctuary For Old And Abandoned Dogs And Becomes A Dog’s Best Friend

Fighting for food, looking for shelter on a rainy day and finding a safe place to sleep: life as a street dog is not easy. But doing all this with many years behind us is even worse. Just like us, older animals have less energy, more health issues and more needs. Without someone to care for them, they are even more vulnerable. It was with all this in mind that physicist Russell Clothier created a specific shelter for senior dogs, an idea that has come to be admired worldwide.

Russell, a physics professor, was not a big lover of dogs. However, when he started volunteering at an animal shelter, he noticed that people almost never adopted old dogs. Shortly afterwards, upon understanding a little more about the reality of dogs, the physicist decided to adopt Shep, a 10-year-old beagle-basset hound.

It was then that Russell realized that older animals require more spending on vets, medicine and food. From then on, he decided to take matters into his own hands: “I need to make up for lost time,” he said.

Russell decided to start a sanctuary for senior dogs. The place is called Shep’s Placea tribute to his dog, and is located in the State of Missouri, in the United States. The site has volunteers who only welcome and care for elderly dogs and who weren’t lucky enough to be adopted when they were still young.

Sanctuary staff work directly with shelters who rescue animals and you deliver to the organization🇧🇷 Upon receiving them, they do their best to ensure that the four-legged friends are well received. Volunteers give a lot of love and affection to these old people until a new family is found.

However, the idea wasn’t that the dogs would just be welcomed into a slightly better shelter; Russell wanted them to feel like they were entering a new home. That’s why he designed the house as a family environment, with comfortable beds, large cages and a large garden where the animals can play. He also installed special showers.

Buying the shelter and decorating it so that all the dogs’ needs were met wasn’t cheap. To make this possible, Russell received the help of volunteers and dozens of donors through GoFundMe, a crowdfunding site, or “virtual crowdfunding”. The story was widely shared on social media and received a series of compliments, mainly for its commitment and affection for animals.
