Healthy, strong people seem more attractive to us. Smooth skin, voluminous hair, bright eyes: these are all a reflection of good genes. Unconsciously, the brain marks those who can potentially have healthy offspring as beautiful.

Why is youth, in all times and nations, so attractive? From an evolutionary point of view, this is logical. A young couple will certainly be healthier and their offspring stronger. And the person himself will live longer. Men of many races prefer women with a mature adult figure and childlike facial features. Such quirks cause a desire to care for and protect her.

Professor David Perrett conducted an experiment. Photos of different men and women were edited: sexual characteristics were exaggerated or watered down. So, they asked the participants to choose the most attractive ones. Men, for the most part, have opted for images of sexually exaggerated women. The women chose the men with average features, the ones who seemed the most sincere and kind. The characteristics that a person needs look particularly beautiful to a potential partner.

Proportions, symmetry, the golden number. Nature creates ideal forms and any deviation means that something has gone wrong. Deformed leaves or asymmetrical flowers indicate an inability to withstand an aggressive environment, or a disease, and man is no exception to this rule. As a result of natural selection, the correct proportions win. Unconsciously, we calculate the ideal measurements and call it beauty.

University of California professor Piotr Winkielman and his colleagues came to the conclusion that a person finds beautiful what can be perceived most easily. If something unknown contains several known characteristics, it is estimated to be more beautiful. The evolutionary benefit is obvious: this profile contains the best of both parents, and with it more survival advantages.

If we already expect beauty from someone, our brain automatically considers them beautiful. Our mind saves energy and it becomes easier to walk along the known path. For example, if at some point we decide that something is beautiful, we are convinced that a painting is a masterpiece and that a certain actress is every man’s dream, it will be difficult for us to perceive it differently. Our perception justifies our deep expectations.

Humans are social beings, so we are invariably driven to follow a fad. And that of faces and countenances changes in the same way as that of dresses. The ideals of beauty, for centuries, have changed dramatically. And, with most people, what is fashionable, a priori, is recognized as beautiful.

We perceive people who look like our parents to be more attractive. Psychologists see in this a certain effect of imprinting, when the child learns from childhood to perceive the beauty of those he knows closely. Also, humans feel sympathy for something just by knowing it. And if facial features are familiar to us, we perceive them as prettier.
