Parents of girls tend to live longer, study finds

Being a girl’s father is synonymous with joy for some and worries for others. Regardless of your opinion, if you have a daughter, now you have reason to be happier. According to a study, fathers of women tend to live longer compared to those without.

Faced with the fact that science doesn’t know much about the effects caused by the birth of a child on the mind and body of men, researchers from the Jagiellonian University, in Poland, decided it was time to deepen the subject. A large amount of demographic data was collected from approximately 4,310 people (2,147 mothers and 2,163 fathers). Afterwards, all this information was analyzed.

The number of children taken into account in the study consisted of boys and girls under two different variables. It was shown that the total number of children or male children had no effect on the parents. However, the number of daughters was found to be linked to paternal longevity.

Those responsible for the study claim that fathers of girls tend to live longer and that the more daughters they have, the longer they live — that’s “74 weeks longer for each daughter born”, to be exact. However, as much as the research represents great news for parents of girls around the world, the data is not as positive as for mothers.

According to the study, which was published by the American Journal of Human Biology, both daughters and sons have a negative impact on the health of the mother, reducing her life expectancy. Another survey, more positive for them, showed that those women who remain single live longer and are happier.

Contradicting the Polish study, another survey points out that having children, regardless of gender, increases life expectancy in both fathers and mothers. Based on information collected over 14 years, the researchers found that couples with children tend to live longer compared to those who never had children.
