8+ Mysterious places that intrigue many tourists and even scientists

There are many places on Earth that, by their very existence, astound tourists and scientists alike. Archaeologists sometimes decipher riddles posed by our remote ancestors, whose talent for inventing mysterious structures was probably passed down to them by Mother Nature. By the way, nature itself sometimes does not get tired of puzzling us.

We, from awesome.club, we decided to take a look at the fantastic constructions and formations of our Planet. And as a bonus, we’ll talk about one of the most puzzling phenomena that scientists have only recently been able to explain. Check out!

Al Naslaa Stone, Saudi Arabia

The mysterious formation of Saudi Arabia intrigues even the most seasoned travelers. Not only because of the fact that the huge rock has practically no contact with the ground, but also because of the absolutely straight crack in its central part, which looks like it was made by a laser. And yes, no one knows how it actually happened.

Valley of Jars, Laos

A set of jugs for giants, a burial ground or an ancient architect’s prank? Nobody knows exactly what these huge pieces are scattered around one of the mountains of Laos. Legend has it that the area was once inhabited by giants, who left their tools there. However, historians do not believe this version at all. They think that the stone jars were used by the ancestors of the Laotians as a burial place.

Teotihuacán, Mexico

Domus de Janas, Italy

Italy is famous for its countless variety of architectural monuments: just look at the majestic Colosseum or the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, on Italian soil, there are also less visited places, which are still attractive. One such place is the mysterious Domus de Janas (“Houses of the Fairies”) in Sardinia, whose diminutive size is more suited to fairies than humans. Today, these small stone houses are believed to be around 6,000 years old and belong to the ancient Ozieri civilization.

Volkonsky Dolmen, Russia

The famous Volkonsky dolmen, located in the mountains of Sochi, is already thousands of years old. The ancient structure is still the subject of controversy and debate by both scientists and people: while some are sure of its cultural purpose, others are convinced of the mystical properties of the dolmen. However, the key question of this structure is how exactly and with what ancient people managed to excavate a space inside a gigantic rock.

Ellora Caves, India

One of the most mysterious constructions on the planet is the Kailasa Temple of Ellora Caves. It is also one of the largest structures in the world that was carved entirely from solid rock. Modern archaeologists can only guess why the ancient Indians needed to manually erect such a unique work.

Temple of Bacchus, Lebanon

The Temple of Bacchus, located in the city of Balbeque, is a structure that was built at the beginning of the first millennium. The dimensions of the temple are so great that the famous Parthenon of Athens seems to be a mere toy in its setting. Such colossal size could not but give rise to countless tales about ancient giants, lost civilizations and even the participation of aliens in the construction. However, according to the official theory, the Temple of Bacchus was built by order of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius.

Masuda no Iwafune, Japan

In different parts of the Asuka region of Japan, there are unusual carved stones. The biggest one is 11 m long and is famous for its square holes, made by the ancient inhabitants of Japan for unknown purposes. According to one version, the stones of Masuda no Iwafune are an example of ancient altars.

Bonus: the sliding rock phenomenon at Racetrack Playa, USA

There is an amazing place in California’s national park, Death Valley. This place is famous not only for its scary name, but also for its very peculiar lake. The reservoir itself has long dried up, and 30 kg stones “crawl” along its bed, leaving traces in random directions.

For a long time, the phenomenon of sliding stones was considered incomprehensible, but in 2014, researchers finally found a scientific explanation for it. It turned out that ice is to blame for the movement of stones: on frosty nights, residual moisture on the surface of the ground freezes, and winds easily “drag” stones away at a speed of 2-5 m per minute.
