Ophthalmologist cat helps kids accept wearing glasses

Our life would not be the same without our pets. They give us love, company, take care of us, entertain us, amuse us, in addition to helping us (and a lot). Guide dogs, dogs that look for lost people, that defend us against attacks from strangers, cats that establish bonds with children with difficulties in relating to the outside world… the examples are many and although we believe that we know everything about them, they always surprise us.

O awesome.club wants to share with its readers the story of Truffles, a cat who collaborates with an optometrist on a difficult mission: to make children who need to wear glasses or eye patches do so with joy.

Two years ago, Danielle Crull, an optometrist, rescued a cat she named Truffles from a shelter and soon realized that the cat was special. Their personality was so friendly that a rare feline-human bond developed between them. Truffles was willing to learn fun tricks for small rewards and never showed boredom.

One day, Danielle tried to put her glasses on him and, to her surprise, he didn’t take them off, as if it were another trick. And that’s how she had a brilliant idea.

Anyone who has had to convince a child to wear glasses knows that it’s usually not a simple task. Most of them resist, both because of the discomfort and the aesthetic issue. And, when it comes to the eye patches used to correct lazy eye, the problem gets worse.

Danielle realized that Truffles could work with her to help children with these accessories and was hired by the children’s ophthalmological center A Child’s Eyes, in Pennsylvania (USA), so that, together with her cat, she could transform the use of glasses and eye patches into something fun.

Since then, this duo has successfully engaged in this task. Truflles is in the office 5 days a week and agrees to put on the eye patches and glasses that the children are required to wear. The cat, who is at ease and even does fun tricks without removing his glasses or eye patches, makes children laugh, making them see these accessories as something fun. Who can hate glasses or eye patches after seeing Truffles showing off in them? The children adore him, caress him, play with the feline and leave the office happy with the experience.

This fun methodology was so successful that Danielle decided to publish photos and videos of Truffles doing crazy things with glasses or eye patches. And audiences fell in love with him right away. These publications gathered hundreds of “likes” and Truffles ended up becoming a real “influencer”.

Without a doubt, Danielle shows us that new ways can always be sought for children to accept what may cause them rejection or annoyance. It’s a matter of using your imagination, adding love and creativity to what you do. And if you have a great ally like Truffles, so much the better.
