The legend of Xangô says that before becoming an Orisha he was the king of Òyó, this region is now known as Nigeria. He was seen as a tyrant, being authoritarian and violent. Xangô’s justice was implacable, being often associated with the element of rock because of these characteristics.

When he was king, Xangô spared no efforts to conquer other kingdoms and expand his territory. His powerful kingdom was known throughout the continent and he was highly respected, for despite being a violent warrior he did not fail to treat other peoples with the straightness of justice.

Also being represented as the Orisha of fire and thunder. Despite being fearless by many peoples, he became a great king capable of unifying the entire Yoruba people. In addition to being known as the creator of the cult of male ancestors, the egungum, and being the only one capable of exercising power over the dead.

His instrument of war was the Oxé (double-edged axe) through which he punished thieves, malefactors and liars. Another important detail is his connection with Nature, through which Xangô drew his strength and knowledge that were used when necessary.

Xangô’s image is usually represented with red garments the color of fire, the red tone reflects that he belongs to royalty. He is also holding in his hands an axe, known as the double-sided ax or by Oxé, which is his instrument of war.

With the arrival of African descendants in Brazil, their culture went through the process of syncretism. Soon, religions of African origin underwent several changes in an attempt to protect the rites. In this sense, Xangô has a strong presence in the oldest terreiros in the country that are found in Bahia and Pernambuco.

In an attempt to protect their customs, Afro-descendants had to adapt many religious symbols and figures. They then assimilated some Catholic saints and incorporated them into Candomblé and Umbanda, referring to them as if they were their Orixás.

In this way, the figure of São João Batista and São Pedro came to be considered as Xangô by Candomblé. As for Umbanda, Xangô is represented by São Jerônimo, who is known as the saint of Letters.

The children of Xangô are chosen to represent the ancestor to whom they have some degree of resemblance. In general, they have a strong physical structure, with a certain tendency to obesity. But, their energy and high self-esteem make them extremely active and slim-bodied people.

They must preserve their position of nobility among the Orixás, valuing their knowledge and power. Despite being people who are always accompanied, they are lonely and this is due to their austere nature and their inflated ego. Making them often vain and prepotent.

Even so, the children of Xangô preserve their warrior nature that makes them so obstinate and strategists. As sons of a king, they want to be recognized for their achievements and wealth. Even if they seem inflexible, they can be both kind and fair. This is the nature of the children of Xangô!

The prayer to Xangô begins with the Kaô Kabecilê greeting, which in Nagô means “Come and greet the King!”. This greeting happens because Xangô is considered the king of the Orixás, the most important and powerful among the Orixás. After greeting, proceed with the prayer as follows:

“Powerful Orixá of Umbanda, Father, companion and guide, Lord of balance and justice, helper of the Law of Karma.
You alone have the right to accompany, for eternity, all causes, all defenses, accusations and elections arising from the disorderly actions of the pure and beneficent acts that we practice.

Lord of all massifs and mountain ranges, symbol and headquarters of Your planetary action in the physical, astral and mental.
Sovereign Lord of balance and equity, watch over the integrity of our character.

Help us with Your prudence.
Defend us from our perversions, ingratitude, antipathies, falsehoods, lack of word and undue judgment, from the acts of our brothers in humanity. You alone are the great Judge. Axe!”
