No cunning thoughts. No seduction game on the table. No theater, no step 1 or step 2. Just us. In that moment, it’s not me, it’s not you, we’re not those. It’s us. We are this resultant, this meeting of souls and disagreements.

The absence of the search for perfection, for the ideal, conventional and cliché. On this rainy summer afternoon, we are essence, not appearance. He smiles carefree, drinks his coffee in less than five minutes. We talked about past, present and future. The rain holds us hostage to each other’s company. The rain, relentlessly, overwhelms the clock, the appointments, the need to leave. He holds us captive indefinitely while he orders another coffee, and I relive old jokes.

This lightness captivates me in an outsized proportion. That lack of strategy or plan B. The opportunity to stop in the middle of the afternoon, drink coffee and laugh at life. Laugh at people running by, running away from the rain. Laugh at each other’s laughter, past loves, catchphrases.

The rain held me hostage to his company for an entire afternoon. I didn’t want to argue, I didn’t try to run away. There was no behavioral map, no recipe, no expected result. I had a clean face and a clean soul.
