No more clothes shrinking in the dryer: the trick to avoid this problem

When we take the still wet clothes out of the washing machine, we have two options. We can hang it out in the hope that it will dry, resisting the various weather conditions of the season, or we can entrust the drying to another appliance, the dryer.

The dryer has long been the number one ally for quick drying, replacing the natural combination of wind and heat. Electronics come to our rescue and fortunately, the dryer is easy to use.

However, we may encounter a big problem: opening the door and discovering that our clothes are now suitable for children. But how could we avoid a possible contraction?

Why clothes lose size

Let's start by trying to understand what could be the reason for this problem. Some associate the problem with the drum, its shape and its movements.

However, temperature is usually blamed. In fact, once the door is closed and the program is activated, high temperatures are reached inside the appliance.

This would affect the fibers of our clothing and “shorten” them, causing them to shrink. Unfortunately, no garment would be exempt from this problem, from natural fibers such as wool, cotton and linen to synthetic fibers such as nylon. However, we can implement some simple tricks.

3 little-known tricks to avoid shrinking clothes when using the dryer

First of all, we must avoid drying clothes completely, at least the most delicate garments that we imagine are at risk of shrinking. This means that we must leave it a little damp, perhaps selecting a specific program, which many dryers have as standard, such as:

– The one indicated by the hanger symbol, which means hanging the clothes and letting them air dry, outside the closet;

– The one indicated by the iron symbol, which suggests completing the drying process during ironing thanks to steam.

Additionally, we could use the preset program for delicate garments, such as silk, with short cycles and lower temperatures.

Finally, instead of loading the drum with mixed garments, we could divide the garments by fabric by manually adjusting the temperature and duration and checking mid-cycle.
