Mysterious Disappearances That Intrigued More Than a Generation

The history of humanity is full of mysteries that, apparently, we are not destined to reveal. Many of them have to do with mysterious incidents that had no witnesses. The most famous, such as the Dyatlov Pass Incident or the story of the lost colony of Roanoke, became world famous and generated innumerable conjectures and legends. But the mysterious events that really happened in human history are not limited to these two cases.

Today, Incrível.club has decided to tell less famous stories, but no less mysterious and exciting, whose protagonists have disappeared without a trace.

The disappearance of the lighthouse guards

The lighthouse, located on the Scottish island of Eilean Mor, is famous for the mysterious story of the disappearance of three guards. The case happened in 1900, when their boss, Joseph Moore, said goodbye to his subordinates and went to the coast station of Breasclete. So, on December 5, first assistant lighthouse keeper Thomas Marshall, second assistant James Ducat and assistant Donald McArthur were left alone on the island.

Ten days later, at the station at Breasclete, there came a warning from the commander of the steamboat “Archtor”. The sailors reported that, in violation of all instructions, the lighthouse was not lit. However, whether due to negligence or bad weather, no one came to the island to check that everything was in order.

Joseph Moore left for the island on the 26th of December, after a severe storm, but found no one there. The doors and windows were closed, the guards’ raincoats hung inside the lighthouse, the lamps charged, but all the clocks stopped.

The only thing that disturbed the image of the general order was the overturned dining table. The men were nowhere to be found, but at the same time, Moore knew his subordinates couldn’t have left the lighthouse, as that was categorically forbidden by the rules, and the missing were experienced and responsible.

During the investigation, the tiny island was tracked meter by meter, but the remains of Marshall, Dukat and McArthur were never found. The case gave rise to the most incredible theories: evil spirits, aliens and even fantastic birds were accused of the disappearance.

However, the investigation maintained a more prosaic version: presumably, predicting bad weather, the men went to the precipice to secure the equipment, only to be swept away by a sudden wave (something that had happened in the past). They likely broke the rules to avoid having to complete the job under hurricanes and torrential rain.

The Springfield Trio

Another story about the disappearance of three people at the same time. It took place in Springfield, USA, on June 7, 1992. Two 19-year-old friends, Suzanne “Suzie” Streeter and Stacy McCall, graduated from high school and had a great night at the graduation party. So, around two in the morning, the girls went to Suzanne’s house, where her mother, Sherrill Levitt, was staying. No one ever saw the three of them again.

The first to discover the disappearance was a friend of the girls, Janelle Kirby, who was passing by the house with her boyfriend: they were going to spend the day at a water park, but Suzanne and Stacy had not been in contact. According to Janelle, the door was open, the lampshade in the entryway was broken, but not the lamp. The house was empty except for Suzanne and her mother’s Yorkshire terrier. The dog was very excited.

Initially, Janelle and her boyfriend didn’t think anything bad had happened. Therefore, and without any malice, they swept the glass of the broken dome at the entrance, possibly destroying some of the evidence.

Finally, the one who gave a clue was Mrs. McCall, who was unable to contact his daughter for a long time. She then went to the Streeters’ house and found Stacy’s bag and clothes. Mrs. McCall listened to the answering machine and, she said, found a very strange message, but accidentally deleted it.

Police were informed of the incident 16 hours after the disappearance. Officers found no signs of a struggle in the house. The investigation was at a dead end until 2007, when a repeat offender, Robert Craig Cox, was arrested, and said he knew something about the Springfield trio’s disappearance.

Investigators found that in 1992 Cox lived in the same town as the missing, meaning he could actually know something or be involved in the disappearance. However, Cox stated that he was going to tell him everything he knew after his mother’s death. So far, the case has not been resolved.

The Missing Crew of “Mary Celeste”

The sailboat with the melodious name “Mary Celeste” was 12 years old when she was transferred to her new captain, Benjamin Briggs. On November 5, 1872, the vessel, under his control, he left the port of Staten Island, in New York, bound for Genoa. In addition to the captain, his wife, his two-year-old daughter and a crew of seven sailors were on board.

The ship was supposed to deliver ethanol belonging to the Meissner Ackermann & Coin company to its destination, but the sailboat never reached Italy. Four weeks later, the boat was discovered by a captain who knew Briggs personally: David Reed Morehouse, who ran the brigantine “Dei Gratia”.

Morehouse found the ship unharmed, but without a single person on board. Everything indicated an urgent evacuation: the lifeboats were not there and the compass was broken when they tried to hastily remove it from the wall. The reasons that compelled people to leave the ship were not clear.

The captain’s jewelry and an overturned oil bottle, which his wife had left in the sewing machine, disproved the version of a pirate attack or a storm. The cargo was almost completely intact (only nine barrels were missing), and the last logbook, dated November 24, reported that the ship was approaching the island of Santa Maria.

The most plausible version of the incident was given by a distant relative of Briggs: he suggested that the alcohol was packaged without being sealed, then slowly evaporated, which caused a microexplosion in the basement, by an accidental spark. Fearing another more violent explosion, the captain urgently evacuated the crew, tying the lifeboat with one of the sails to the “Mary Celeste”.

But with the force of the wind, the boat lurched forward and the rigging, tied to the boat full of people, stretched and broke. So perhaps the boat was overturned by a wave, causing the death of all passengers.

Korrina Lynne Sagers Malinoski and her daughter

On November 21, 1987, the owner of a Samnerville store in South Carolina discovered that his employee, Korrina Lynne Sagers Malinoski, was not going to work. As he was unable to contact her, he went looking for her.

On the way to Korrina’s house, the boss found her car. It was closed and parked near the plantation where the woman’s husband worked. Just in case, he called the police and reported one person missing.

Police officers discovered that Korrina was last seen while driving on the road, around 11 am. The guards didn’t find anything else. No signs of a struggle were found near the car, and the search for the plantation yielded no results either.

There was no change in the case until October 4, 1988, when another disappearance occurred.🇧🇷 this time from Korrina’s 11-year-old daughter from her first marriage, Annette Deanne Sagers.

The police sketched what Annette should look like now, and made her possible current portrait.

The last to see the girl was her stepfather. Around seven in the morning, she was waiting for the school bus near the same plantation where her mother disappeared. When the driver arrived to pick up the girl, Annette was gone. Her stepfather didn’t know that his stepdaughter had disappeared until he realized she hadn’t returned from school. So she went to the bus stop, where she found a note with the words: “Dad, Mom is back, hugs to the kids.” The “children” were the girl’s brothers.

The examination revealed that the note had been written by Annette. To this day, that piece of paper is still the only evidence in the disappearance case. As a result, the story has spawned many legends: some locals assume Korrina was kidnapped by aliens and returned for her daughter, others think Annette was taken by the ghost of her murdered mother.

Netizens suggest more pragmatic versions. According to one, the woman’s husband is involved in the disappearance of Korrina and Annette (but the police have no evidence to prove this theory). According to another, Korrina had run away with her lover and a few months later returned to fetch her daughter.

The disappearance of five children from their own room

On Christmas Eve 1945, the owners of a small Virginia hotel, Giorgio and Jennie Sodder, were at home with their nine children. It was already ten o’clock at night, but the older sister, Mary Ann, had given the children toys and they didn’t want to go to bed. Leaving the younger children under the eldest’s supervision, Giorgio and Jennie went to rest, asking the young woman not to stay too late. The two took with them their two-year-old daughter, Sylvia, who had already slept.

Jennie woke up at 1 am to a smell of smoke. She ran out of the room and realized the house was on fire. Unable to get close to the phone, she woke her husband and Mary Ann, who was sleeping on the couch in the living room, and asked her to get little Sylvia out. Afterwards, Jennie started screaming to wake up the children, whose room was on the top floor, but only the two oldest ones came out. No one ever saw the others again.

Their bodies were also not found. The parents refused to believe that their five children had died in the fire and assumed that the children could have been kidnapped by Sicilian mafia representatives. Seven years after the tragedy, devastated parents put up posters with pictures of their children near their home, asking for information about their whereabouts.

According to the father of the family, they had reason to suspect that the children had been kidnapped: shortly before the incident, a man came to see him, trying to get a job. When he saw the electrical installation, he said that one day it would cause a fire. The day before, the hotel owner had asked the electric company’s experts to check the wiring and it was in excellent condition, so he paid no heed to the man’s words.

Some time later, an insurance salesman went to see Giorgio to…
