“Marianne”, the new bet of Netflix, the horror series that scared even Stephen King

Horror is a genre that knows no middle ground: either we love it madly or we don’t even think about seeing it. If you are one of the first, you should know that Netflix has prepared an unmissable premiere: Marianne🇧🇷 This French series has everything to make your hair stand on end: demonic characters, dark scenes and a thin line between the real world and the dream world.

O incredible.club found courage and decided to investigate the series in depth, which incidentally was recommended by Stephen King himself, the king of modern horror. The plot has as its protagonist Emma Larsimon, a writer of horror books that is a bestseller, but who decides to kill the heroine in her fiction, because she is tired of being typecast in the genre. However, a visit from the past forces her to return to her hometown of Elden, a place she swore never to return and which inspired her stories.

There, she realizes that supposedly fictional characters from her novels have become real and have begun to appear to torment her. Among them is Marianne, a witch who takes the soul of her prey and who has taken the form of an old woman, inspired by a childhood nightmare of the main character.

The 8-episode series has been available on the platform since September 13th. It was created, directed and co-written by Samuel Bodin, and its protagonist is Victoire Du Bois, an actress you may know from Call Me By Your Name (2017), Oscar-winning film for best adapted screenplay.

Less than three weeks after its launch, the series is already acclaimed by the public and critics. On the IMDb website it has a score of 7.6 and most of the comments highlight how its characters captivate us, the atmosphere it creates and the quality of the scenes.

But if there is a voice authorized to comment, it is Stephen King, creator of It, The Thing; Carrie; and The illuminated, among other horror classics. And yours recommendation via Twitter was clear: “If you’re one of those crazy people — like me — who likes to be scared, you’ll like to Marianne🇧🇷 She has flashes of humor similar to Stranger Things🇧🇷 It also has (without false modesty) a bit of Stephen King.”

One of the strengths of the series is that it rescues the classic horror ingredients: witches, demonic drawings, demons, a city with forests, old houses, a lighthouse, and an extremely tenuous line between dreams, fiction and reality.

Add to that an aesthetic of long shots, dark settings and an excellent performance by Mireille Herbstmeyer, the French actress who plays Marianne and who you’ll think about when you can’t sleep at night after watching the series.

To heighten the terror, the filmmakers inserted frames subliminals in harrowing moments of history. They are images that appear in microseconds, perhaps imperceptible to the eyes, but not to the brain. For example, when Marianne’s name is mentioned in the first chapter, you can see a scary image of the witch.

This technique, reminiscent of Brad Pitt’s character in Fight Clubwho inserted images into films when he worked as a projector in a cinema, is repeated at various points in the plot, with the idea of ​​reinforcing the horror in a story that, by itself, has enough arguments to impact it.
