Lipocavitation: 8 questions about the treatment against localized fat –

1. What exactly is lipocavitation?

The term, also known as ultracavitation, or just cavitation, is the mechanism by which some types of ultrasound destroy the fat cells. It works as follows: the ultrasound device emits an inaudible sound wave capable of penetrating the skin and reaching the adipocytes (fat cells). “It acts like the tremor of an earthquake in the cells. This agitation, which is called cavitation, causes physical damage to the cells, which break down and release the fat inside,” explains dermatologist Jardis Volpe, from São Paulo. When the membrane is ruptured, the fat (or triglyceride, the contents of that cell) breaks down into two other substances: free fatty acids and glycerol. “The latter is converted into water, being eliminated normally by the organism. The free fatty acid, in turn, is reused by the body as energy”, explains the doctor.

2. Is there a health risk?

No, as long as the treatment is carried out according to the protocol and in a reliable clinic. But a possible increase in cholesterol is always questioned in this type of procedure. As explained above, when the fat molecule breaks down, it splits into two substances. “The free fatty acid, which could cause an increase in cholesterol, does not fall into the bloodstream. It is transported via the lymphatic system to the liver or to other cells, where it is reused by the body as energy”, explains Jardis Volpi.

3. Are all ultrasound equipment the same?

No. For cavitation to occur, the device must work at a certain wave frequency: from 20 to 70 kilohertz. Some operate with waves at higher frequencies (measured in megahertz) and, therefore, do not have the ability to effectively break up fat cells. In these cases, only the water inside the adipocytes is released. “This type of ultrasound reduces the size of the cell. So, there may even be a loss of measurements, but caused by the loss of water, not fat”, explains dermatologist Juliana Carnevale, from Rio de Janeiro. Some examples of ultrasounds that actually cavitate are the Accent Ultra, the Ultrashape, the Power Shape and the Galeno Sculptor. Manthus and Heccus do not do lipocavitation.

4. Who can have the treatment?

Lipocavitation remodels the body contour and helps reduce localized fat. Therefore, it is indicated for those who are at the ideal weight, who are slightly overweight or have pockets of fat. “I do not recommend treatment in arms, as it can cause flaccidity”, warns dermatologist Abdo Salomão, from São Paulo. The method is not suitable for women who wish to lose more than 5 kilos, as there is no weight loss, only measurements. Pregnant women and pacemaker carriers should not do it.

5. Does the method replace liposuction?

Of course. Although lipocavitation provides a real decrease in measurements, it does not remove the same amount of fat as a lipo, which, it is worth remembering, is plastic surgery and, therefore, has a much more delicate pre- and post-operative period. In lipocavitation, there is no pain or recovery period. But the outcome of treatment cannot be anticipated and varies for each woman. Ingrid Peres, a dermatofunctional physiotherapist at the Onodera beauty clinic network, estimates a loss of 5 centimeters in circumference in about five sessions. The recommendation is six to eight sessions, one per week.

6. Do you need lymphatic drainage afterwards? And exercises?

According to dermatologists, lipocavitation works even without massage. However, the drainage helps to enhance the effect. The vast majority of lipocavitation packages include manual or mechanical drainage. Some doctors also add endermology (a vacuum massage) to the combo. A double balanced diet and regular physical activity is fundamental in any aesthetic treatment. It’s no use investing fortunes in a machine that fights localized fat and exaggerating on French fries or falling head over heels for chocolate. It’s money going down the drain! Regarding exercises, it is worth walking at least 30 minutes three times a week to burn the energy released when the fat cell is broken.

7. What precautions should I take when buying a package?

The main security measure is to choose the clinic well. The demand for lipocavitation is high on the internet and, therefore, some unethical places can take advantage of the good faith of the clients and use inferior quality devices, which will demand a greater number of sessions (thus, you will spend more money) or which they may not even reach the result. Not to mention the ultrasound equipment that does not perform cavitation, but is sold as such. In order not to fall into a trap, the way out is always to follow the recommendation of friends, look for the large aesthetic clinic chains or for one that is run by a dermatologist affiliated with the Brazilian Society of Dermatology. As it is not invasive, the treatment can be done by a physiotherapist (and not necessarily by the doctor). Even so, the professional must have experience to operate the device.

8. What is the average price?

Between BRL 600 and BRL 800, each session. Imagining that it will take about eight, you will spend an average of 4,800 reais – yes, it is a lot of money, so think carefully about the cost/benefit ratio! Some clinics offer packages for lower prices, but always be suspicious if the offer is unmissable (especially in group purchases on the internet). In fact, the treatment is not cheap and, if you decide to invest in a super promotion, make sure that you are not being taken for granted.
