Let’s explain the endings of 14 movies that caused a lot of confusion among viewers

In Twin Peaks we learn that “owls are not what they seem”. In the same way, we can change our attitude towards many movies simply by knowing the true meaning of their endings.

At the awesome.club we have seen several films whose meaning is understood only with the help of the clues left by the director, so today we are going to talk about such productions and explain the meaning of their final complexes. Warning: this post contains spoilers… and a very interesting bonus at the end!

City of Dreams (2001)

This is one of the few David Lynch projects that has a definitive ending. However, it is very difficult to understand that 10 Director Tracks Added to Official DVD and even with them, it is not easy to solve the film.

The film features Lynch’s favorite theme, the cohabitation of two worlds, and the plot is divided into two parts. Thanks to the clues left by the director, you can understand that, in the real universe, Diane ordered the murder of her friend Camilla and, realizing what she had done, committed suicide. At the same time, Betty/Diane maintains a great relationship with Rita/Camilla. Then, the first part of the movie is Diane’s dream (in which she is Betty), and the second half is reality.

When watching the movie, pay attention to 2 details: the blue key, what it is the killer’s signal that the order has been carried out, and upon seeing it, Betty realizes she cannot live with it; it’s the Theater “Silence”at which point it becomes clear that the dream is just that, a dream.

O Fabulous Destination Amelie Poulain (2001)

The story of this strange young woman, told by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, won the hearts of viewers for her beauty and innocence. But not everything is so simple: the film is imbued with secret messages and describes Amélie’s initiation, the crisis associated with the process and the ways to get out of this situation🇧🇷

In this case, initiation is a psychological transition from girlhood to womanhood. As a child, Amélie did not receive support or attention from her parents, then she spent a lot of time living in the world of her fantasies, with the help of which she managed to get out of her crisis.

The Duplicate Man (2013)

With a short speech on behalf of the protagonist, Denis Villeneuve revealed to us the full meaning of his film. Anthony is unhappy in his marriage to Helen: the women in his head have spun a net he wants to get out of every now and then, deceiving his partner.

Adam is Anthony’s downside, who cheats on his wife with Mary. In fact, the protagonist wants to have both: to be a good husband and to be with his mistress. This is impossible, and therefore its double symbolically dies in an accident with his mistressbut all things in life are repeated, and error becomes a farce.

At the end, despite Anthony staying with Helen, he realizes that it will all happen again.🇧🇷 His wife also understands this and therefore appears before him in the form of a giant spider. The enemy is himself, his nature and his desires.

Source of life (2006)

The film directed by Darren Aronofsky follows the course of the interconnected narrations of three characters, through which the main message can be captured. In the first, an oncologist, Tom, seeks a cure for his wife, Izzi, who dies of cancer. In the second, the last novel by Izzi appears. And, in the third, Tom travels to space in search of the mythical star Xibalbá.

Izzi’s novel, which parallels his personal story, shows his attitude towards life and death: she believes in immortality, but not in the structure of a body🇧🇷 He leaves the book unfinished because he wants Tom to finish it and accept his death. At this time, events take us to space, showing the union of Tom and the star: this is the moment of acceptance.

In this way, Aronofsky teaches us the eastern philosophy of the attitude towards life and death🇧🇷 We all die, but we don’t disappear, we reincarnate into something different.

The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer (2017)

Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the best masters of the cinema metaphor. His films are never simple and this one is no exception. The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer takes us back to the ancient Greek tragedy of Euripidesin which King Agamemnon killed a sacred deer of the goddess Artemis while hunting, so because of this he had to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia.

The surgeon Steven has become the king, and the goddess Artemis is a strange child named Martin, whose father died on the operating table, becoming the sacred stag. Steven does not admit his guilt, even though he operated on the man while he was drunk. He also does not feel guilty at the time of the forced sacrifice (the death of his son). Nonetheless, “justice” has been restored, regardless of the protagonist’s opinion and wishes🇧🇷

dogville (2003)

The cinematic spectacle of Lars von Trier makes you think of your own soul, morality and your limit🇧🇷 Over the course of 8 chapters, Grace tolerated the behavior of the townspeople, finding various excuses to justify it. However, it all ended with the fact that, in Chapter 9, Dogville is burned.

The director showed that forgiveness doesn’t make the world a better place, it only encourages abusers. In this way, it equates excuses and arrogance🇧🇷 After all, reluctance to judge others by applying the moral laws by which you judge yourself is arrogant.

Justice must be restored as it makes the world a better place. But in her humility, Grace has built up so much resentment that it was necessary to burn the entire city to restore order🇧🇷

Annihilation (2017)

In his film, Alex Garland showed us the most unusual alien invasion. Around a meteorite that fell on the planet, an area began to form that expanded nonstop. The anomaly is a prism that refracts everything that entersincluding genetic information.

There is a direct parallel between the anomaly and cancer🇧🇷 In fact, cancer is the same unmotivated force that changes everything around you. At the end, we see a scene where Lena hugs her husband. Judging by your bright eyes, it’s clear that now part of the anomaly🇧🇷 Most likely, this is a happy ending for humanity, which will overcome its mortal nature.

The Double (2013)

Richard Ayoade managed to perfectly convey the essence and atmosphere of Dostoevsky’s eponymous novel. However, it is not a film adaptation, so there are differences in both the plot and the ending. As in the book version, the twin is the result of a disease caused by self-loathing🇧🇷 This is evident at the moment of the fight: when Simon hits James, the mark is on Simon’s face.

Probably, the despondency and utopia of the surrounding world is due to the prolonged depression of the main character. But the ending, unlike the book version, leaves hope for the best. In the last scene, Simon’s victory over the double is shown, and the jump from the window symbolizes the rebirth of the protagonist🇧🇷

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Michel Gondry’s film is a beautiful and complex love story. It all starts with the supposed first meeting of the protagonists, which takes place after the narrated events, which constitutes the main idea: if two people were created for each other, they will be together anyway🇧🇷

Most of the events take place in Joel’s head, where he fights for Clementine’s memories and realizes her importance in his life. The fight is lost, the memory is erased, but the feelings remain, and they are what bring the characters together.

Thanks to Mary, the heroes find recordings of negative moments from the past, but Joel and Clementine are no longer afraid. The couple starts a new relationshipchoosing life with its problems, full not only of beautiful moments, but of boring everyday life as well.

calm (2019)

Despite receiving poor marks, this rather confusing film by Steven Knight is distinguished by a unique plot twist. The whole story is Patrick’s fantasy while creating a video game.

The protagonist’s father died in the war, the mother lives with her stepfather, who is a tyrant, and Patrick abandons reality by spending time on the computer. He creates a game, whose characters are the people around him, and this is the preparation for the murder of your stepfather🇧🇷

the lobster (2015)

the lobster is an allegory of a relationship taken to the absurd🇧🇷 There are no half-measures in the world, either you are alone or you are with your partner and if you think too long you become an animal. In this way, Yorgos Lanthimos showed the absurdity of the categorical, because no one can know in advance what his life will be like.

The protagonist is trying to move away from imposed clichés, but his attachment is not sincere. And when your lover loses her sight, David is unable to make a correct decision: he stays with her despite everything, but decides to take out his own eyes so they are the same. However, the ending is left open: will he run away or stay with her once blind?

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018)

The film is the result of 29 years of work by Terry Gilliam🇧🇷 During all this period, many messages were changed and new ones added. This is a multifaceted production about director Toby Grisoni, who meets the protagonist of his film about Don Quixote.

Finally, given the opportunity to shoot the work, the director produced something different from what he had planned. Instead of trying to convey the story of Cervantes, turned out to be an allusion to Gilliam’s attempts to make a film about the “ingenious gentleman”🇧🇷 As a result, the man who killed Don Quixote was Gilliam himself.

the lost road (1997)

Each viewer can draw their own conclusions about the lost road, but if we trust the explanation given before the premiere, we might find out the truth. “Dissociative escape”: this is the phrase that appeared in the advertising slogan. In medicine, this term refers to a mental disorder accompanied by selective amnesia.

The first half of the movie is about the musician Fred Madison, who killed his wife: that’s the reality. The moment when Fred is mysteriously replaced by the innocent mechanic Pete is due to the state of “dissociative fugue”, when the brain creates a different personality to avoid heavy memories. Such a state cannot last forever, and the fantasy is gradually split, turning Pete back into Fred. An important role is assigned to the “Mystery Man”, which is a manifestation of the protagonist’s madness.

Therefore, the second half of the film can be called the protagonist’s agony as he awaits his execution🇧🇷 At the beginning, Fred hears the phrase “Dick Laurent is dead”, and, at the end, he pronounces it himself, demonstrating to the spectator the awareness of his own…
