Prayer for those who are going to have surgery

“Father God, You are my refuge, my only refuge. I ask You, Lord, to make everything go well in my operation and to grant me healing and help.

Guide the surgeon’s hands so he can be successful. I thank You, Lord, because I know that doctors are your instruments and helpers.

Nothing can happen to me, except what is decided for me, in your love, O Father.

Take me in your arms now, for the next few hours and days to come. I will then be able to rest completely in the Lord, even when I am unconscious.

As I surrender my entire being to You in this operation, allow my entire life to be in Your light. Amen.”

Guide the hands of the surgeons too, and thank you, Father, for giving them the skills and talents that can heal the sick and bring hope to the dying. Thank you for giving them sharp minds and calm hearts so that they can carry out the operation without causing harm to my body.

Holy Father, as I fall into unconsciousness under the anesthetic, and as parts of my body are placed under surgeons’ knives, continue to touch me with Your healing hand. I trust, God, that You are my healer.

The Lord alone has the power to remove this affliction that torments me. I believe there is no disease more powerful than his name, oh my God.

In the name of Jesus, I rebuke this disease within my body. I trust that everything will go well, because the Lord is with me. Amen.”

Psalms for those who are going to have surgery

The psalms are known to promote spiritual cleansing. But each of them is usually related to some theme in life. Psalm 69 is usually indicated to ask for divine protection and mercy before undergoing surgery.

1. Deliver me, O God, for the waters have entered my soul.
2. I got stuck in a deep mud, where I couldn’t stand; I entered the depth of the waters, where the current takes me.
3. I’m tired of crying; my throat was dry; my eyes fail waiting for my God.
4. Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs on my head; those who seek to destroy me, being unjustly my enemies, are powerful; So I returned what I didn’t steal.
5. You, O God, know my folly; and my sins are not hidden from you.
6. Let not those who hope in you be put to shame because of me, O Lord, GOD of hosts; Let not those who seek you be put to shame because of me, O God of Israel.
7. Because for your sake I have endured insults; confusion covered my face.
8. I have become a stranger to my brothers, and a stranger to my mother’s children.
9. For the zeal of your house has devoured me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen upon me.
10. When I cried, and punished my soul with fasting, it became an insult to me.
11. I put on sackcloth for a garment, and made myself a proverb for them.
12. Those who sit at the door speak against me; and I was the song of drinkers of strong drink.
13. But I pray to you, Lord, at an acceptable time; O God, hear me according to the greatness of your mercy, according to the truth of your salvation.
14. Take me out of the mire, and don’t let me get bogged down; May I be free from those who hate me, and from the depths of the waters.
15. Let not the flood carry me away, nor swallow me up into the deep, nor let the well close its mouth over me.
16. Hear me, Lord, for your mercy is good. Look at me according to your great mercy.
17. And do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress; hear me quickly.
18. Come near to my soul, and rescue it; deliver me for the sake of my enemies.
19. You have known my shame, and my shame, and my confusion; Before you are all my adversaries.
20. Abuses have broken my heart, and I am very weak; I waited for someone who had compassion, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found them not.
21. They gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
22. Let their table become a snare before them, and prosperity a trap.
23. Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and make their loins tremble constantly.
24. Pour out your wrath upon them, and let your fierce anger bind them.
25. Let your palace be desolate; and there is no one to live in their tents.
26. For they persecute the one you injured, and talk about the pain of those you injured.
27. Add iniquity to their iniquity, and let them not enter into your righteousness.
28. Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
29. But I am poor and sad; put your salvation, O God, on high for me.
30. I will praise the name of God with song, and I will magnify it with thanksgiving.
31. This will be more pleasing to the Lord than an ox or a calf that has horns and claws.
32. The meek will see this, and will be pleased; your heart will live, because you seek God.
33. For the Lord hears those in need, and does not despise his captives.
34. Let the heavens and the earth, the seas and everything that moves in them, praise him.
35. For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah; so that they may live there and possess it.
36. And the seed of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell in it.
