John Travolta has been helping his children get over the loss of their mother

John Travolta is one of the most famous actors in the world. From rising to fame for his acting and dancing talent in the late 1970s, to rebuilding his career in the 1990s, Travolta has gone through ups and downs. Both in his personal and professional life, he was able to overcome the recent death of his wife and strengthen his relationship with his children.

The story of John Travolta and Kelly Preston begins when they met in 1989, on the set of the movie The Smart Ones. At that time, Travolta was already a renowned name in the cinema and, immediately, he felt attracted to Kelly, who paved his own career in Hollywood. The marriage of both took place in 1991, in two ceremonies – a symbolic one, in Paris, and another official one, in Florida.

Together they had three children: Jett (1992-2009), Ella Bleu (born 2000) and Benjamin (born 2010).
On January 2, 2009, Jett died suddenly at the age of 16 while the family was vacationing in the Bahamas.

After Jett’s passing, the family found solace with the birth of Ben in 2010. “He brought a new spirit and purpose to our home,” Travolta said in an interview. Kelly had been trying to get pregnant for three years, and at 48 she experienced a new beginning with the arrival of Ben.

Nine years later, aged 57, Kelly died of cancer. In a statement, a representative for the Travolta family said: “On the morning of July 12, 2020, Kelly Preston, beloved wife and mother, passed away after a two-year battle with breast cancer.”

“She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and brought everything she touched to life,” said the spokesperson. The actress’s death was considered sudden by the media, as both the disease and the treatment were not publicly disclosed.

The mother’s departure was a hard blow for the whole family, but especially for Benjamin, who was 9 years old at the time.

Travolta said his son once admitted, “Since Mom is gone, I’m afraid you’re gone too.” John replied, “You love the truth, and I will tell you the truth about life. No one knows when they will need to leave. His brother left at 16, too young. Your mother, at 57, was still young too… and I may die tomorrow. You too. Anyone can… There’s no way to know, just do your best and try to live as long as possible”.

John mourned in silence and, two years after the tragedy, began to open up to the press.

In a recent interview, he stated, “Grief is individual, and experiencing your own journey is what makes healing possible. It’s different from someone else’s journey. The most important thing you can do to help others, when in the midst of grief, is to allow them to grieve, without wanting to complicate things with your own grief… If I die tomorrow, the last thing I want is seeing that everyone close to you is devastated.”

This whole experience also made the actor reflect on the future and think about what will happen over the next 30 years.

“I’ve been trying to pass on the gifts I’ve been given to my children: my daughter, Ella, is a brilliant actress, a great singer and songwriter. And I’ve been teaching my son Ben how to act because I love the acting life and I don’t think there’s anything better. I want them to continue… my main goal is to get everything ready early”.

The children have also expressed their gratitude for the help received from their father in difficult times. Recently, Ella posted on social media: “Dad, you make parenthood look easy, even though it isn’t. You make each day better than the last. It brings us joy when we are sad. You are our best friend, and we love you from here to the moon and back.”

The Travolta family is more united than ever, ready to face the challenges ahead. Ben, aged 11, continues to enjoy his childhood until the time comes to choose his path. Ella is on the verge of stardom with a film based on “Alice in Wonderland” and with a song available on streaming platforms.

Meanwhile, John Travolta revealed his intention to make more musicals, dramas and comedies, and now he can afford to be more selective and make the most of each job. In 2021, father and daughter starred in a commercial in the US football championship final, in which they appeared dancing. The piece went viral on the web, making it clear that the father will always be ready to help his daughter’s career.
