Joaquin Phoenix is ​​an American actor born in Puerto Rico. His artistic abilities have earned him a Golden Globe, three Academy Award nominations, and even a Grammy, among other awards. After his most recent release, Joker, has shown that his talent is undeniable. However, Phoenix is ​​not just dedicated to acting. The actor also has a huge interest in saving the lives of all species of animals.

Since he was very young, Joaquin and his family have not eaten meat. In an interview, the actor revealed that, at the age of three, he watched some people catch flying fish. They violently beat the animals with their sticks. He linked the scene to his parents giving him fish to eat. Since then, the actor has made his family completely change their eating habits.

Phoenix collaborates with PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization dedicated to the protection of animals — whether they are destined for food or mistreated as entertainment or raw material for the clothing industry. He gave voice to the fight for animals to have dignified treatment, showing the importance of everyone becoming aware that no species is more important than another — the so-called “speciesism”. The star promotes veganism as a lifestyle that helps preserve all species. After all, the life of a dog is no more important than that of a bird, which is often considered a consumer product.

In 2013, as part of his collaboration with PETA, Phoenix recorded a video in which he shows himself in distress while drowning in a lake, narrating all the sensations that a living being has when exposed to situations in which he cannot breathe. In the video, he also asks viewers to try to identify with the fish that experience these sensations every day while fishing. Joaquin promotes empathy with the emotions of animals and appreciation for all living things that live on Earth. After all, as we have already said, all lives are of equal importance.

Joaquin didn’t just raise his voice for marine life. During one movie where he played Johnny Cash, he refused to wear any traditional leather clothing and even required PETA approval for his cowboy boots before wearing them during filming. Years later, when he became aware of the process of obtaining the wool used to make men’s clothing, he decided to defend the sheep as well.

In addition to PETA, Joaquin participated hand in hand with the LCA (Last Chance for Animals) and with Amnesty International. The actor worked to raise awareness that hundreds of animals are affected every day, also thanks to companies that carry out painful tests on living beings that, in turn, cannot defend themselves. The idea is to promote the creation of regulations aimed at protecting all species that inhabit the Planet.
