Japanese share a tip on how to find your lost pet: ask a stray cat for help

Twitter users in Japan are discussing an extraordinary way to find a lost pet: give the neighborhood stray cats some treats, asking them to find it and bring it back home! Strangely, it worked for many people who shared their stories with happy endings into a viral Twitter thread.

It all started with the Twitter user @charlie0816, who posted to your account:

“My cat disappeared 2 days ago. Someone on Twitter said that to find a cat, you must ask stray cats for help to tell your pet to come home, if you see it. Last night I tried. I went to a neighborhood store, found a stray cat, and asked for help. My cat came home this morning. Um… Does it really work?” @charlie0816

The post went viral and received more than 68,000 retweets and 350 comments, in which people shared their stories of loss and even recounted the moment they located their pets. Turns out this weird method worked for dozens of people! Here is the story of another Twitter user:

“Our cat disappeared when we moved to a new location and was missing for a week. I asked a stray cat to help me find him and the next day he brought my cat home.” @soratkor

There are many ways cats use to communicate with humans and other cats. It can be through meows and whistles, body movements and behavior. Cats often “talk” to each other using special sounds, physical interaction, visual and chemical signals; and with us, they meow because they know it’s the perfect way to get some pampering.

If you see a cat on the street wagging its tail, it may not mean anything to you, but the furry one could be sending an important message to your “colleagues”. We cannot fully decipher the language of cats, but it is clear that after many years of evolution, cats have developed their own language.

We’ll probably never know why this tip worked for so many different people, but it looks like cats know some secrets on how to get our lost pets back to us. We will help strays in any way we can and hope that they will always help us when we need them.
