“It is better to marry 20 times than to remain unhappy”, Gretchen’s love life story

Gretchen has been in a lot of relationships over the years — and many of them weren’t the expected “happily ever after.” In pursuit of love and happiness, the voice of Conga, conga, conga has been married 18 times, dated some well-known names in the industry, and has been engaged a few times before ending these relationships.

Despite considering having had seventeen ex-husbands, Gretchen has only officially been married five times. The singer’s first marriage, at just 20 years old, was with country singer Chrystian, from the duo Chrystian and Ralf, but the union lasted a few months. From her second marriage, to Silva Neto, her first child was born. However, the relationship did not last and the two broke up. In the course of her love affairs, the muse had six more children.

In 2013, Gretchen exchanged alliances with Portuguese businessman Carlos Marques. The two met at the beginning of the year and, after six months of dating, decided to get married only civilly. About the wedding, the artist revealed at the time that she was “proposed in Monaco and it was very romantic”. The two met earlier this year in the French capital, where Gretchen has moved with her young daughters.

Still married, Gretchen and Carlos accepted the challenge to participate in Power Couple 2016. They did not win the edition, but they are one of the most remembered couples to this day, especially due to the disagreements between the singer and the other participants, collaborating for the program to have biggest audience since its debut. After seven years of marriage, the two decided to separate.

All her persistence in finding love again bore fruit in 2020, when the famous one goes to the altar with saxophonist Esdras de Souza. The ceremony was held in Belém, Pará, and had references to the Amazon region, such as the popopô boat, which took the bride to the altar, and the cake filled with Brazil nuts. The singer was surprised by her boyfriend with the request. “I was surprised and very happy. Ezra likes to make things right and we are engaged and happy.”

Another curiosity is that the couple decided to make the union official for the second time, only in Portugal.
But does not stop there. Gretchen and Esdras de Souza are so happy together that they plan to hold an indigenous ceremony to seal the union.

“Gretchen asked me to marry him in Sírio de Nazaré, in 2019. Now, I’m asking her to marry him with a renewal of vows, in a totally indigenous wedding, on Marajó Soure Island, with Pajé Zeneida. Also because of our ancestry, which is totally the people of the forest”, he clarified.

The relationship seems to be going from strength to strength. Always very affectionate, the Rainha do Rebolado found a way to honor her current husband: she wears a gold chain with the initial of his name. In September 2020, the singer proudly displayed the chain on Instagram. “It’s ‘and’ from Ezra,” she explained. How cute, right?

Over the years, the singer ended up suffering several heartbreaks and she sees this as a big factor in so many successive marriages. The truth is, Gretchen never felt good about switching partners. “I never liked getting married several times, I never liked having changed people, having broken up my family, but sometimes things don’t go the way we want”.

Still, she tries to see the positive side of her journey: “Finally, I inspired so many women to be happy, that this alone is worth marrying a thousand times over. If I have to get married a thousand times so I can help people, that’s fine with me.”

The amount of men the singer has dated is still not, for many people, socially acceptable and, of course, her marriages have been, and still are, a reason for criticism. But if there’s one thing the brunette doesn’t care about, it’s negative comments and prejudice. She lives life her way. “It’s better to be married 20 times than to be unhappy with the same person for 20 years,” she said.

“I am 61 years old. If we count an average of two, three years each relationship, I didn’t even have a relationship. There are people who turn 18 in one night. I wanted to know what changes in people’s lives if I get married once, 20 or a thousand times”.
