Incredible crafts made from golden grass, the gold of Jalapão

Brazil is well known around the world for the strength of its agribusiness. However, our country has riches that not everyone knows about, such as the diversity of its regions, its peoples and its rich culture that sometimes hides in the most distant corners of the country.

Although this evergreen species grows in tropical regions and in the Brazilian cerrado, it is only in the Jalapão region, east of Tocantins, that it can be found in large quantities. It became famous in the early 90s and is currently known worldwide. In addition to being raw material for beautiful artifacts such as necklaces, bracelets, mandalas, rings, bags, decorative items and much more, it is practically the only source of income for several families in the region.

The grass can only be harvested between September 20th and November 20th, to avoid its extinction. Every year there is the so-called Festa da Colheita, so that families can start their work. Collection can only be carried out by artisans registered with the Tocantins environmental agency, which grants a license valid for one year.

As you can see, these handcrafted objects really shine like gold. This is also due to the fact that the grass harvested in Jalapão contains a high amount of aluminum which, despite being harmful to the vast majority of plants, does the opposite for this one: the leaves are more beautiful.

The tradition of harvesting and handicrafts is passed down from generation to generation. The people who live in the region wait for this time with great joy and do the work with great love, always singing typical songs during the journey.
