The real question is: Did you find these memes funny? idiots? Maybe a little of both?

According to a study published in the journal Cognitive Processing, your reaction could indicate your intelligence. In the article, a team of psychologists concludes that people who enjoy silly humor — they may have a higher Intelligence Quotient (IQ), show less aggression, and resist negative feelings more effectively.

To test this correlation between a sense of humor and intellect, the researchers had 156 male and female participants read 12 cartoons from one of the works of German caricaturist Uli Stein.

One such work paraphrased a classic meme, which showed a mortician handling a corpse when a nurse whispers, “The autopsy is over; he’s just looking for his wristwatch.”

Then the participants took some basic IQ tests and answered questionnaires about their mood, aggressive tendencies and educational background and whether they understood each meme.

The results were remarkably consistent:

Participants who understood and appreciated the memes showed a higher IQ and reported less aggressive tendencies than those who did not.

By the way, the participants who liked the memes least showed the highest levels of aggression and the worst moods in the group. This last point makes sense when considering the health benefits of laughter. If you are not able to face negativity with optimism, of course you will feel worse.

You may be asking yourself “but what does this have to do with intelligence?”

According to the researchers, understand and laugh at stupid memes requires a little more mental gymnastics than, say, processing a common joke: it is a complex information-processing task that an “ordinary human being” is not privileged to possess.

Pretty much any common joke would put your brain to work. But stupid memes require a lot more emotional control to understand and laugh.
