HR Management, Psychology and ADM – Similarities and differences

Learn about the differences and similarities between the faculties of Psychology, Administration and Technologist in Human Resource Management.

Hello friends!

As I have a degree in psychology for 8 years, as I worked as an HR Analyst in a Human Resources Consultancy and as I have already done some administration periods, I believe I can share with you the differences and similarities between psychology, HR management (technologist) and management.

the faculty of business

It is interesting to note how the business school is called the business school (Business) in English. I say that it is interesting because we are not always clear in our minds about what management is and what business school is.

In this college, therefore, we learn about business. On how to manage a company, an institution, a government (in the case of public administration).

And, to be a manager, an administrator, we have to have an overview of how a business works, ranging from accounting to the sales area, passing through skills such as control and leadership, market and economic vision, to understanding Resources Humans.

the faculty of psychology

As we have already spoken here on the site, in several texts, about the Faculty of Psychology, I will not dwell on this part. In summary, we can say that in this faculty we study all aspects of the individual, his thoughts, feelings and behavior.

One of the first areas of psychology, historically speaking, was industrial psychology. With the knowledge acquired in laboratories and with tests, psychologists at the beginning of the last century began to evaluate individuals in order to know if they were capable of occupying job openings. This was, for example, the first practical application of the famous Binet IQ test – the IQ.

Human resource Management

As both the business school (5 years) and the psychology school (4 to 5 years) are very broad colleges, there was a demand in the labor market for professionals who knew how to work in the Human Resources sector, without necessarily having studied everything that psychology and management study.

In fact, here in Brazil, first we saw the emergence of postgraduate courses in HR and, soon after, with the approval by the MEC of short-term colleges (technologists) that give a higher degree, we saw the emergence of colleges of Management Resources Humans. Names may vary slightly from institution to institution, but the goal is the same.

The HR professional can work in the following areas:

– recruitment

– selection

– training

– personal department

We recommend – Personal Department Course

Briefly, we can say that recruitment consists of looking for possible candidates for vacancies; the selection of personnel selects through interviews and dynamics the candidates who have the best profile for the vacancy; training takes place for employees who are already hired so that they develop skills or abilities necessary for their function and, finally, the personnel department deals with the more accounting side of HR (the bureaucracy of the hiring and dismissal process).

The differences between Psychology, Administration and HR Management

Well, basically, we can demarcate the following differences:

1) Psychology and Administration are broader faculties and, therefore, are longer in duration (double or more time compared to the technologist).

2) The faculty of Administration gives an overview of the entire business and the entire market (including an in-depth understanding of the economy that allows, for example, the administrator to know that an increase in Central Bank interest rates will have an impact on the macroeconomy in the following semester ).

3) The Faculty of Psychology gives a broad view of the individual, his personality, his behaviors, his way of inserting himself in a group, the probability of emitting or not a behavior.

For this reason, only a psychologist can apply psychological tests, carry out personality assessments and report on the psyche of each candidate or employee hired or about to be dismissed.

4) All three professionals can therefore carry out the recruitment, selection, training and development processes. But, only psychology professionals can apply tests validated by the Federal Council of Psychology.

Conclusion

In this text, I tried to get straight to the point about the differences between the three faculties. Theoretically speaking, we will see many more differences and perspectives, but in the job market, what works in practice are these issues mentioned above.

So, if you want to work with HR and are in a hurry to graduate, the technologist in HR Management will give you a Higher Education diploma (a college).

If you have the availability to study for 4-5 years, you can choose between psychology and business schools and have a training not only focused on HR, but broader and more complete, covering other areas. After all, administrators and psychologists can work not only with HR, but also in dozens of other areas. It is the advantage of having had the opportunity to study for a few more years.

The difference between psychology and administration is that the administrator will have a vision more connected to the functioning of the business and its insertion in the broader organizational environment (competition, purchases, sales, marketing, accounting, taxes) and the psychology professional will have a vision of the organizational process as a whole, however, more connected to what we call organizational culture, that is, the behavior of individuals in a group (a company is a group of individuals).

So there is no simple answer about which college is better to do. If time and money matter a lot, the HR Management Technologist can be a good option. Even because, later, already working, it is possible to leave for graduation in administration or psychology or a post-specialization course.

Choosing between psychology and business will depend on one’s personality and the desire to study college subjects. Therefore, I always suggest that we take a calm look at the curriculum of each college.
