How to remove gel nail polish: learn step by step

It gained fame for its shiny finish and greater durability. But, after showing off your beauty on your nails, the question often arises: “how to remove gel nail polish?”. To make the process easier, we have prepared a guide that explains the two types of product and how to remove them step by step!

What is gel nail polish?

It is a nail polish with a different composition to provide longer lasting and more intense shine. Within this concept, there are two products available.

One of them is the UV gel nail polish, with the same composition as the gel used in artificial nails and extensions. The resin with photosensitive active ingredients forms a rigid layer of color when it comes into contact with the cabins’ ultraviolet rays. That’s why the packaging is black, avoiding contact with natural light so it doesn’t spoil.

The main disadvantage is precisely the difficulty in removing it. The process can be done by a professional, using an electric drill, or at home, with prolonged exposure to acetone, which can dry out and weaken natural nails.

The other gel polish is the hybrid. This means that it is not the same as the conventional one, but it also does not use a cabin. The durability is greater than that of traditional, but less than that of UV. It can be removed in the usual way, with a little nail polish remover on cotton wool.

How to remove UV nail polish?

There are three ways to remove the product that was applied with the help of ultraviolet rays from the cabins. Two of them are with acetone, but the exposure time to the product is prolonged and can leave nails weakened and skin dehydrated with constant use. Non-acetone removers are not strong enough to remove the product. The other option is with a drill and must be carried out by a specialized professional.

How to remove gel polish from nails with acetone

You will need:

hand moisturizer cuticle oil nail polish remover or acetone bowl nail spatula

Way of doing:

Apply cuticle oil around your nails to help protect them. Place acetone or nail polish remover in a bowl. Dip your nails in acetone, taking care that all of them are completely exposed to the product. The less skin on your fingers comes into contact with the product, the better. Wait 10 minutes. Use a spatula to gently slide it over the nail, gradually removing the nail polish. Don’t use force or squeeze to avoid hurting yourself. If some pieces don’t come off, place your nail in the acetone for another minute and repeat the scraping process with the spatula. When you have removed all the gel polish, wash your hands well with soap and water. Use moisturizing cream on your hands to prevent dry skin. Use cuticle oil around your nails.

Apply cuticle oil around your nails to help protect them. Separate 10 pieces of cotton and 10 pieces of aluminum foil large enough to wrap around your nails and fingertips. Dip the cotton pieces in acetone. Place the piece of cotton over the nail, covering it completely. Wrap the foil around your fingertip to help keep the cotton in place. Press tightly, but be careful not to tear the paper. Wait 2 to 10 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil and cotton and begin the process of gently using the spatula to remove the gel polish. If the nail polish doesn’t come off, put the cotton and aluminum foil back on and wait a few more minutes. When you have removed all the gel polish, wash your hands well with soap and water. Use moisturizing cream on your hands to prevent dry skin. Use cuticle oil around your nails.

Removal with drill

Removing UV gel nail polish with a drill is the most recommended, because it does not expose the nail and skin to chemical compounds. But it must be carried out by a specialized professional, who knows the sanding process using electrical equipment. Don’t try this at home because you could hurt yourself.

To avoid weakening your natural nail, give it a “rest”. Invest in intervals without nail polish and/or stretching. Use strengthening foundation, cut the length and don’t forget to apply hand moisturizers. Healthy eating and daily water intake are important self-care for health and beauty as a whole.

If you notice breakages, weakness, yellowing, stains and other discomforts, see a doctor. It is necessary to investigate the cause of the problem. Applying products to hide imperfections or illnesses will only make the situation worse, as your nails will not receive adequate treatment.
