How to pack a suitcase

Traveling is a delight! But packing is not always an easy task, especially for women, who, in general, tend to take more things than men.

After all, when you have to choose what to take, everything seems to be indispensable and doubts arise about what is a priority, what can be left out and, above all, about how to accommodate all the luggage.

The good news, however, is that with a few simple tricks, it’s easier to pack everything you need, making the most of the space in your suitcase. Below, the personal organizer Claudia Moura, qualified by OZ! Organize Your Life and director of Claudia Moura Personal Organizer, gives the tips:

When choosing a suitcase

According to Claudia Moura, the best options are rectangular ones, which are also the most common. The ideal size will depend on how long you will be away and the size of your family.

“Families with young children can opt for a large suitcase, in which everyone’s things can fit. The advantage is that you will only have one volume to worry about”, he says. “For families with older children, the best option is for each child to have their own suitcase, since at this stage the children are not always staying with their parents”, he adds.

The personal organizer also reminds you that there are some special bags for suits and shirts. These are ideal for business trips where you need to bring a lot of social clothes.

What to take?

It’s true that most women are a bit exaggerated when it comes to packing! Many would like to be able to put a wheel in the wardrobe and take it whole, right?! But, as this is not possible, it is necessary to be very rational when choosing what to take.

“What to consider: how long you will be staying; the climate of the place; the climate change and the events (are you going out for dinner? Dancing? Etc.)”, says Claudia Moura.

The personal organizer’s tip is to always think of pieces that can be used more than once and that combine with several things. “For example, a pair of jeans can be worn three times, so take them with three shirts. This way you already have three looks put together,” she says. “Basic pieces and neutral colors also help to make the combination”, she adds.

Whoever goes to the beach will probably wear a bathing suit and flip-flops most of the time… So, why take 4 pants, 17 shorts, 12 dresses and 5 pairs of high heels?! Of course, all this is not necessary, however tempted you may be to take the items from your wardrobe that you like best.

“Evaluate well the possibility of an event that needs these more chic clothes”, warns Claudia Moura. But, if you realize that you won’t actually be participating in many events at night, don’t go overboard with putting together the outfits to take away.

For the cold weather, the personal organizer’s tip is to take a heavy and warm coat, in a neutral color, such as black, brown or off white. So you can just change your underwear (shirts, blouses and pants).

“The same thought goes for shoes: take basic, comfortable pairs that match the season, so you can wear them more than once and avoid taking the entire shoe rack,” explains Claudia.

packing the suitcase

It’s time to pack everything in your suitcase: get to work! Claudia Moura points out that, regardless of whether the trip is by plane or car, whether it is a short or long trip, the tips are basically the same.

“The main rules are: clothes that wrinkle less should go at the bottom of the suitcase, like jeans, twill, wool. And clothes that wrinkle more, in addition to being on top, should be folded as little as possible, to avoid having too many marks”, explains the personal organizer.

Next, Claudia explains how to proceed with packing:

  1. First the pants: place these pieces flat on the bottom of the bag with the legs out. After putting everything on, fold the pant legs over the other clothes.
  2. Then put on shorts and shorts.
  3. Then put on the dresses. They should be folded as little as possible and placed flat, with part of the clothing sticking out of the suitcase (as was done with the pants).
  4. T-shirts should be folded as usual – that traditional fold – and then rolled up. These pieces can be placed in the corners and empty spaces of the suitcase.
  5. Underwear should be placed in bags (which can be TNT), to make it easier to find them.
  6. In the case of trips to the beach or in the summer: the sarongs must be placed stretched and, the bikinis and bathing suits, in individual plastic bags. They will also serve to protect your clothes on the way back from the trip, in case your bathing suits are still wet.
  7. Shoes can be placed in individual TNT bags, ziplock bags (if they are small size shoes) or even disposable shower caps (to protect the sole of the shoe).
  8. Personal hygiene products, cosmetics, medicines and makeup should be placed in a bottle. Liquid products that can leak into the suitcase must be placed in plastic bags.
  9. Pajamas and underwear need to be easy to grab when you open your suitcase at your destination, so keep it for the end.
  10. Finally, don’t forget to carry a large bag at the bottom of your suitcase to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean ones.

What to pack in your handbag?

Claudia Moura points out that women who are mothers already know that they need to pack that “basic bag” when they go out with the children. “They should always think about how long the trip takes and, in this way, consider how many meals will be made on the way (bottles or baby foods); diaper changes; clothing changes (in case of weather change or emergencies),” she says.

The personal organizer adds that, for adults, it’s always good to have a coat, a pain reliever, a cell phone charger, a bottle of water, a cookie, personal documents and some money (in cash) on hand.

For national or international air travel and/or travel with children, extra attention must be paid when it comes to documents. “In addition to identification documents, you may need a passport, a ticket (of course), documents for the children with a photo (i.e. depending on where you are going to travel, the birth certificate is not enough, an ID card is required, even for babies). In addition to authorization to travel with the child, in case one of the parents is not with them or if you are not the child’s mother”, says Claudia.

The personal organizer recalls that some regions of the country and some countries require vaccination for certain diseases. “Be aware of this and the deadline… Yellow fever, for example, you must take 10 days before the trip”, she concludes.

It is also essential to always check the baggage policies for your flight, if you travel by plane. Consult the airline’s guidelines as well as the guidelines of the international airport from which you will depart.

With all these guidelines, it will be much simpler to pack your suitcase and prepare for a pleasant trip. Remember not to overdo the choice of clothes and shoes to take, always opting for those that match several looks! Then, just follow the step-by-step guide mentioned by the personal organizer Claudia to put everything inside the suitcase, making the most of the space it offers. Good trip!
